⛏️ What is Epic Dungeons?
An ever-expanding mod packed with complex, detailed dungeons with more possible playable variations than atoms in the universe! I found Minecraft's dungeons underwhelming; plain, and nothing I stumbled upon had that unique feel where every time I discovered it I was encountering a completely new dungeon.
This exists to ensure no two dungeons you encounter are ever the same - with the aesthetic beauty to match!
🔥 What makes this a 'Roguelike' mod?
Variation, loot, challenge, and bosses!
A 'Roguelike' is a game where every new experience will be different than the last, starting from scratch, typically with a perma-death mechanic and individualistic worlds unique to your playthrough. 'Procedural generation' is a mix of precisely designed bits and pieces, coded like a jigsaw where 4 pieces could connect in over 20 different ways. The pieces multiply!
We all know it: Minecraft is a procedurally generating game where you gather resources, advance and explore. Epic Dungeons expands upon that with procedural dungeons you can uncover and risk your journey in, fighting enhanced monsters, surviving traps and collapsed floors, and lining your pockets with loot and lore you won't find anywhere else!
These structures are designed in such a way every single room will always feel fresh, let alone every dungeon. Structure mods normally add awesome standalone structures; you see it once, you've seen it, and that's that. Epic Dungeons is closer to Strongholds, Mineshafts and Villages, except bigger, detailed, and complete with boss rooms!
It's all about playstyle. For me? It's a roguelike Minecraft addition sprinkling extra joy in my ever dangerous worlds - otherwise, this still works as a pack of epic dungeons adding to underground spectacles you will run into through your adventures.
Dungeons:
🏰💎 The Crystal Castle
A Buried Kingdom
The very first step into a journey through the buried castles of a long forgotten kingdom. Buried and overgrown, infested with crystals consuming the very blocks themselves… Spooky. The dungeon combines all the usual suspects in Minecraft mobs. Redesigning that little boxy cube into something immense and deadly. Skeletons, zombies and spiders roam the halls of this sunken castle, left to ruination and infestation.
Are you ready to fight for a kingdom's recovery? Or will you stumble upon some unexpected letters in your search…? Is there something bigger going on within the castle? What led it to sink deep down? Or rather… Who? Enjoy the treasure hunt!
This dungeon comes with over 500 unique pieces, set up to combine with one another for varied rooms, connections and origin points in trillions of different ways. Guaranteeing no two times will ever have the same layout – unless you’re an immortal vampire with centuries to spare, or the unluckiest soul in the galaxy.
All the loot tables are customised to suit the chest’s locations. This means some may not be worth your time, while others are more desirable than you can imagine. This ups the challenge of typical Minecraft. Complete with tougher enemies, the occasional miniboss, and a dangerous foe at the end of it. Are you ready to fight?
Your struggles will be more than well-rewarded, with the greatest treasure waiting eager for the plunder near the boss… Take a risk, walk away rich. The castle depends on you!
🕸️🕷️ Forgotten Sewers
Eternal Entanglement
Old, abandoned sewer networks for a city long since evacuated. Buried by the futility of time. Crushing all things… Now occupied by oversized monstrous eight legged critters. Scattered with nests in caves carved into the sewer system walls by eerily powerful fangs. Oddly sentient, they even gathered their own resources… Something is making them so strong, but what? It seems not everyone abandoned the sewers.
This dungeon experimentally incorporates over 800 unique pieces, making the most of varying room shapes and layouts. No one room will ever repeat - you won't find any room exactly the same by accident, ever.
Expect infested flooded tunnels, foliage to dig through, cobweb covered sewage, and hidden hideouts in the walls where previous adventurers and workers lost their final breaths. Leaving notes for you to piece together, and final messages for their families.
Can you solve the magical mystery empowering these spiders, find the hidden chambers and put an end to the crawling ruins? Or will you too join the fallen, another bite for the arachnid army?
🔥🪨 Molten Asylum
When the Nether Creeps Over
Other worlds were a dangerous venture. Were we ever truly ready to explor the Nether realms, home to creatures never seen before, dangers never imagined? What happened for these very human structures to crumble to flame and ruin? Abandoned asylums throughout the land have fallen to the incursion of the creatures from beyond, overtaking it. Their own Molten Asylum.
This dungeon is a compact design, where the shape and scale will always be the same, like the Woodland Mansion, except the interior will never repeat. Incorporating over 200 unique pieces, varying up parts of the interior on the upper and lower floors to create a mix of layouts you'll never see twice, added to with every individual cell, spawner, chest and miniboss location varied up hugely, aiming for that smaller file size while cruising through with quality.
Expect a ruined, extremely dangerous environment rife with powerful creatures capable of snuffing the lights out of you or catching you off guard on a ledge, the floor covered in holes down to the lava pits below. Magma of every sort of everywhere, from the Fire Spirits (Blazes), to Elementals (Cubes), to the terrain itself. The tale of what unfolded lingering on notes throughout, unlikely to ever collect them all, each serving a piece of the puzzle...
There's a chance of netherite gear here, and potions so eerily powerful you could never craft them alone. Even spawning materials are a possibility. Is it worth the risk? Can you solve the mystery and clear this Asylum? Or will you be the next creature devoured by fire?
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ:
- Can I remove this mod from a world I was using it on? / Can I add this to an existing world?
- Yup! If you remove it, structures already generated will not disappear, but no new ones will be generated. If you add it, the opposite! New chunks will generate structures from this mod! (When the dice gods say so.)
- Can this mod work on a server?
- Yes! This adds a 'small' piece to the generation of the Minecraft world. If the mod is on a Forge server of the right version, you will see every dungeon it has to offer. Nothing added goes beyond basic Minecraft functions. Only the server needs it to work!
- Does this conflict with ___ mod?
- I doubt it! The only chance of 'conflict' would be if a mod completely overhauled how structure generation works, because this only adds structures into the game. Whatever mod you're using should work with it.
- Can I lower/raise how common dungeons are?
- Raising it could break it, and lowering it might leave you never finding any - they're big dungeons! I may upload versions in future with increased space between them depending on interest. :)
🎟️ Upcoming / Planned!
Epic Villages: A Roguelike Minecraft
Sprawling Cities: Work in Progress!
When I say 'Villages', picture 'Cities', because a village couldn't be a further cry from the truth. From Dwarven Kingdoms under generated mountains to Steampunk cities rising up from the ground and branching out in towers that shoot up into the sky. Sky islands of celestials and our typical fantasy medieval empire in the plains... A living world is only complete when there are people to match.
Expect inspiration from all my other projects to trickle into this through development. Hints of inventions from the Magical Steampunk City, colourful lightshows from the Dazzling Cyberpunk Illusion, and an Elven Metropolis reminding you you can't burn down every forest you come across.
Updates on the release of this expansive add-on to Epic Dungeons is accessible through the cheapest Patreon tier, offering an opportunity to massively populate your world with living, breathing cities! Now some of that empty terrain will have a couple residents. Looking out from your mountainside resort will finally not be so lonely.
Crypt of the Lost
Moaning Monstrosities
Certain Empires bury their fallen with respect. One such Empire has come and gone. Perhaps shifted away by continental breakage. Leaving their crypt far away from where they once set up homes. Their dead sleeping in a network of tombs... ...but some woke up. Eyes glowing. Moans echoing through the collapsed tunnels. Signs of bloody markings on floors and candles scattered in circles litter the underground. Is something worse at hand here?
Tomb of the Lich King
The Army that Never Sleeps
Rumours of a Lich travel far. Unmistakable. All powerful. The deadliest creatures known to the living, surrounded by hordes of powerful undead. Skeletal armies at their side. One such Lich announced their presence. A spire reaching up above the ground, magical eye gazing out over the land. Their Tomb encased in the ground. Waiting for any challengers who dare trespass on the sacred tomb.
Suggestions:
I massively encourage pairing Epic Dungeons (and its add-on, Epic Villages!) with any mod that fleshes out the content from villagers, biomes and other additional structures! Monsters too! Everything adds up when you're looking for an epic Minecraft experience.
- Biomes o Plenty
- Terralith
- Xaero's World Map
- Xaero's Minimap
- Alex's Mobs
- Guard Villagers
- Minecolonies
- Waystones
- Nyf's Spiders
Here are some of the other awesome dungeon and village mods to check out too! They can all exist in the same world, though you may need to tweak settings in each to lower spawn rates. :) With the way Minecraft handles structure generation, you'll get a few funny overlaps! Pillager outposts can already spawn in the middle of villages in the base game - have fun!
- Better Villages
- ChoiceTheorem's Overhauled Village
- When Dungeon's Arise
- When Dungeon's Arise: Seven Seas
If you don't like Minecraft's glowing effects, some of the mobs and dungeons here spawn with it! Try No Glow to disable it.
Just remember not to overload your game! Have fun!
