Better F5 Cam
Better F5 Cam is a lightweight Minecraft camera enhancement mod designed to provide a smoother, more flexible, and more comfortable third-person camera experience while preserving the familiar feel of Minecraft's vanilla camera.
The mod improves the standard third-person view by giving you precise control over the camera's distance and allowing you to smoothly zoom in and out without changing the way Minecraft's third-person perspective fundamentally works.
Features
Smooth Third-Person Zoom
While using the third-person camera, you can hold the F5 key and use the mouse scroll wheel to smoothly adjust the camera distance.
This allows you to move seamlessly between a closer third-person view and a more distant perspective depending on what you are doing.
Whether you want a closer camera for building, screenshots, exploration, combat, or simply a more comfortable third-person perspective, the camera can be adjusted to your preferred distance.
The zoom system is designed to feel smooth and responsive rather than behaving like a simple instant camera-distance switch.
Toggle the Mod Whenever You Want
Better F5 Cam includes a dedicated toggle keybind.
The toggle key is unassigned by default, so you can choose a key that fits your own controls and preferences.
When the mod is disabled, the camera smoothly returns to the original Minecraft third-person camera behavior.
When you enable Better F5 Cam again, the camera seamlessly returns to the previously selected zoom level, allowing you to switch between the enhanced camera and vanilla behavior without having to configure your preferred distance again.
This makes it easy to temporarily disable the mod whenever you want to use the normal Minecraft camera.
Default Third-Person View Reset
You can also assign a separate keybind to reset the camera to Minecraft's default third-person camera distance.
This gives you a quick way to return to the familiar vanilla perspective without manually adjusting the camera.
Once reset, the camera remains at the default third-person distance until you decide to customize the zoom again.
This is especially useful when switching between different camera setups or when you simply want to return to the standard Minecraft view.
Your Camera, Your Controls
Better F5 Cam is designed around player customization.
The mod does not force a specific key configuration on you. Instead, important actions are exposed through Minecraft's keybind system so you can configure them according to your own controls.
You can choose your preferred keys for:
- Enabling or disabling Better F5 Cam
- Resetting the camera to the default third-person distance
- Using the enhanced third-person camera controls
The toggle key is intentionally not assigned by default, preventing unnecessary conflicts with existing Minecraft controls or other mods.
Smooth Transitions
Switching between camera states is designed to feel natural.
When Better F5 Cam is disabled, the camera transitions back toward Minecraft's normal third-person perspective instead of abruptly changing the camera position.
Re-enabling the mod restores your previously selected camera distance, creating a consistent experience between the two modes.
The goal is to make the enhanced camera feel like a natural extension of Minecraft rather than a completely separate camera system.
Lightweight and Performance-Focused
Better F5 Cam is designed to remain lightweight and avoid unnecessary processing.
The camera functionality focuses specifically on third-person camera control without adding unnecessary systems or features that could negatively affect gameplay performance.
The mod is intended to provide a more comfortable camera experience while keeping the implementation as simple and efficient as possible.
Vanilla-Friendly Experience
Better F5 Cam does not attempt to completely replace Minecraft's third-person camera.
Instead, it builds upon the familiar vanilla experience and adds additional control where the standard camera is limited.
If you prefer Minecraft's original camera, you can disable the mod at any time and return to the normal third-person behavior.
If you want more control, simply enable Better F5 Cam again and continue using your preferred camera distance.
Why Better F5 Cam?
Minecraft's default third-person camera works well, but sometimes you may want more control over how close or far away the camera is.
Better F5 Cam focuses on solving that problem without turning the camera into an overly complicated system.
It provides:
- Smooth third-person zoom control
- Customizable camera distance
- A dedicated mod toggle
- Vanilla camera fallback
- Previous zoom-level restoration
- Default-view reset functionality
- Customizable keybinds
- Lightweight camera handling
- A familiar Minecraft-style experience
The result is a more flexible third-person camera that stays simple and easy to use.

Projects on Modrinth are automatically available through a Maven repository for use with JVM build tools such as Gradle. To learn more about the Modrinth Maven API, click here.
Note: When available, you should use the creator's maven repo instead as it will have transitive dependency information that the Modrinth Maven API does not. You may also end up with duplicate dependencies if you use a mix of Modrinth and non-Modrinth Maven repositories for your dependencies, because the group identifier will be different when served through the Modrinth Maven API.
