Chest Peek 1.6.2
Look at a container and see what is inside it. No opening, no commands.
Fabric · Minecraft 1.21.9+ · Requires Fabric API · Works as a client mod, does more when installed on the server too
Highlights
- Live contents on servers. Put the same jar on your server and containers show their contents without anyone opening them, including chests other players have filled. Players without the mod are unaffected.
- Automatic indexing. In singleplayer, containers around you are recorded every ten seconds and on world load, so chests are already known before you walk up to them.
- Item filter. Keep a list of things you care about and hide everything else from both the overlay and the search.
- A steadier panel. The overlay keeps one width per container, so hiding empty slots or switching filters no longer makes it shift or jump.
Overlay
- Works on chests, barrels, shulker boxes, hoppers, droppers, dispensers, furnaces, blast furnaces, smokers, brewing stands, chiseled bookshelves and ender chests.
- Contents are drawn in the container's real slot order. Double chests read as one 54 slot container from either half.
- The header shows the container name, slots used, free slots, and when the contents were last recorded.
- The panel lifts itself above the hotbar, health and armour rows instead of drawing over them.
- A quiet tick plays when the overlay opens on a container you were not already looking at.
Server support (optional)
- The same jar doubles as a server mod. Nothing is required of players who do not have it.
- Clients detect server support on their own and fall back cleanly when it is absent.
- The server only answers for containers within 64 blocks of the asking player, in loaded chunks.
- Requests are rate limited per player: 20 single lookups per second, 1 area scan every 4 seconds, scans capped at 48 blocks and 256 containers.
On a plain vanilla server the client is never sent container contents, so a chest becomes known the first time you open it and stays known from then on.
Saved chests
- Every container you see is saved permanently to
config/chestpeek-chests.json, split per world and per server. - Ender chest contents resolve from any ender chest block once recorded.
- Containers that no longer exist are dropped from the record once you are near enough to confirm it.
Search
- Search everything you have seen by item name. Results show counts, distance and coordinates, nearest first.
- Items packed inside shulker boxes are searchable, and results say which box they are in.
- The header totals a matched item across every result, for example
1284x Iron Ingot across 12 chests. - Open any result for its full contents grid, with hover details listing what is inside a shulker box.
Per chest
- Give a container a name. The name replaces the block name in the overlay and is searchable.
- Copy a counted contents list to the clipboard.
- Forget a single container.
Filter
- Add item or block names, or parts of names such as
ironorlog. - Up to 24 entries, toggled on and off without clearing the list.
- Matching stacks keep their slot positions; everything else is blanked out.

Performance
- Live reads are throttled and skipped entirely when a container's contents have not changed.
- Saving runs off the render thread.
- The overlay caches its layout between frames and rebuilds only when something actually changes.
- Search results compute their matches once per query rather than once per frame.
Upgrading
If you had dragged the overlay to a custom position, it is anchored by its centre now rather than its left edge, so it will sit half a panel to the left once. Drag it back and it will stay put.
Projects on Modrinth are automatically available through a Maven repository for use with JVM build tools such as Gradle. To learn more about the Modrinth Maven API, click here.
Note: When available, you should use the creator's maven repo instead as it will have transitive dependency information that the Modrinth Maven API does not. You may also end up with duplicate dependencies if you use a mix of Modrinth and non-Modrinth Maven repositories for your dependencies, because the group identifier will be different when served through the Modrinth Maven API.
