Lava's Stair Fix is a Java Edition data pack that changes how much material stairs cost in survival. The numbers are based on how much of a block each item actually fills, instead of vanilla's rounded-off recipes.
What it does
Stairs (13 wood types)
- Replaces vanilla's 6 planks → 4 stairs with 6 planks → 8 stairs, in the normal stair shape.
- Adds a second recipe: 3 planks → 4 stairs, in a small L-shape. It fits in a 2x2 grid, so it also works in your inventory crafting grid.
- Covers oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry, pale oak, crimson, warped, bamboo, and bamboo mosaic.
Why you might want it
A stair is 3/4 of a block, so 8 stairs are exactly 6 planks of wood. If vanilla's stair costs feel wasteful to you, this brings them in line with the real volumes.
Before you download
- This makes stairs noticeably cheaper than vanilla. Stair crafting yields twice as many stairs per craft.
- It is built for pack format 101 (Minecraft Java Edition 26.1.x). It will not work correctly on older versions.
- It replaces vanilla's recipe files for the 13 stairs listed above. If another data pack changes the same recipes, the pack that loads last wins.
- The new 3-plank stair recipes work in the crafting grid, but they do not appear in the recipe book on their own. To unlock them, run
/recipe give @s *(or/recipe give @s lavas_recipes:oak_stairs_smallfor a single one). - This is a data pack only. It works on servers with no client mods needed.
How to install
- Download the zip file.
- Put it in your world's
datapacksfolder (saves/<world name>/datapacks), or add it when creating a world. - Run
/reloadin the world, or rejoin it.
