Frens 1.1.230: a smoother first world
This update fixes what a brand-new player runs into in the first hour, found by installing Frens from scratch on a new Survival world with cheats off.
⚠️ The AI chat and voice features are still in beta. Everything below works without them. Questions, bugs and feedback: join the Frens Discord.
Works with cheats off
- The singleplayer host can use Frens in a world with Allow Commands off. Before, the roster, follow toggle and other buttons failed with "Unknown or incomplete command", so a new player couldn't get or command a companion.
- No Carpet needed to stop a bot.
/bot stopno longer shows a red error without Carpet installed. - Clearer feedback. Spawning a bot that's already here tells you so. One stop prints one line. The roster no longer lists bots that are already in the world. A brand-new companion says "Hey" instead of "welcome back". Addressing a bot while AI chat is off tells you where to turn it on.
Companions on a fresh world
- Woodcutting from nothing. Ask a bot with no axe to chop wood and it punches a tree, makes a crafting table, sticks and a wooden axe, then keeps going.
- Following comes back after a task. Bots used to stop following you after any job and say "Busy with another task right now." Now they finish the job and follow you again.
- Trees near the world spawn are fair game. On a new world, bots no longer walk far away because the trees next to spawn were treated as protected. Trees inside your own base stay protected, and the bot now tells you once why it's heading out to find others.
- No wasted tool wear. Bots no longer use an axe to dig dirt or clear leaves. They use their hands or the right tool.
- Safer item pickup. Bots no longer squeeze into 1-high gaps for a dropped item and hurt themselves. They give up on items stuck up in a tree instead of staring at them.
Small screens
- Every Frens screen fits at the smallest GUI size (320x240 and up). The Guide, bot inventory, roster, recruitment and popups rearrange or scale down to fit, and overhead speech wraps. On normal-size screens nothing changes.
Before you update
- Both client and server need the mod. Don't install it together with the original AI-Player mod.
- The AI features are optional and off by default. Open the Guide (
]) → AI setup to turn them on.
Projects on Modrinth are automatically available through a Maven repository for use with JVM build tools such as Gradle. To learn more about the Modrinth Maven API, click here.
Note: When available, you should use the creator's maven repo instead as it will have transitive dependency information that the Modrinth Maven API does not. You may also end up with duplicate dependencies if you use a mix of Modrinth and non-Modrinth Maven repositories for your dependencies, because the group identifier will be different when served through the Modrinth Maven API.
