Sentinel
Sentinel is a cross-platform Minecraft security plugin designed to help server administrators assess the trustworthiness of incoming connections through a configurable risk scoring system.
Sentinel is designed to work across both Minecraft servers and proxy networks, supporting:
- Bukkit
- Spigot
- Paper
- BungeeCord
- Velocity
How it works
When a player connects, Sentinel analyzes several available signals and combines them into a security score from 0 to 10.
The score can take into account:
- Player name - configurable checks based on the player's username
- Client information - identification and analysis of the Minecraft client when available
- Network information - detection of VPN, proxy and Tor connections
- Community reputation - an optional reputation score based on information shared between participating servers
The goal is not to automatically determine whether a player is "good" or "bad", but to provide server staff with an additional security signal when evaluating a connection.
Configurable security
Sentinel is designed to be adaptable to different server environments. Administrators can configure how individual checks contribute to the final score and define how different score ranges should be handled.
This makes Sentinel suitable for everything from small private servers to larger Minecraft networks.
Roadmap
Sentinel is actively being developed. Planned improvements include:
- More advanced Minecraft client identification
- Additional connection and network analysis
- More detailed reputation information
- Additional security checks
- Optional stricter client-side integrity checks
- More configurable actions based on score changes
- Improved scoring accuracy and reliability
Designed for networks
Sentinel is built with proxy-based networks in mind. Its architecture is intended to allow security information to be evaluated consistently across different servers and proxy layers.
Sentinel is not intended to replace traditional anti-cheat software. It focuses on connection trust, reputation and security signals, providing another layer that server administrators can use alongside their existing moderation and security tools.
Privacy & transparency
Sentinel should only use information necessary for the security features enabled by the server administrator.
Network-based checks and reputation features may depend on external services or shared community data. Server administrators should review the configuration and applicable privacy requirements before enabling these features.
