Star Dragon 2.3.0 — Update Summary
New Ability: White Hole
Star Dragons can now cast White Hole.
- The white hole travels in the direction the player is aiming, then hovers when it hits an obstacle or reaches its maximum range.
- Once stationary, it creates a Stellar Suspension field that gradually lifts and controls hostile targets while dealing damage.
- When the white hole expires naturally, it releases affected targets and pushes them downward. Kills caused by the resulting fall can be credited to the caster.
- The caster, allies, and passive animals are protected from its normal targeting. Effects on players follow the server’s PvP and team rules.
- The ability has its own icons, damage type, death messages, and graphics settings.
Black Hole and White Hole Combination: Singularity Annihilation
A white hole can pair with a nearby black hole when there is a clear line of sight between them.
- The two singularities orbit a shared center, gradually spiral inward, and collapse into a large explosion.
- During the combination, the white hole stops its normal suspension effect and does not deal its natural-release damage.
- Explosion damage falls off with distance and obstruction, and follows PvP and team friendly-fire rules.
- The explosion can affect pets, villagers, passive animals, and the casters. Terrain damage follows configuration and protection permissions.
- Pairing distance is configurable, and each singularity can participate in only one combination.
The white hole has a bright core, luminous rings, and an outward-flowing disk. The combination adds orbital trails, a connecting band, collapse effects, and expanding shockwaves. Black hole rendering has also been adjusted for the interaction.
Ability Visual Improvements
Star Laser
- Redesigned the beam with layered light, spiraling star streams, impact glow, and flashes.
- Added smoother transitions between charging, firing, and the aftermath, along with particles, a looping sound, and screen shake.
- Effects scale with graphics settings. A fallback rendering path is available when the custom shader cannot be used or Iris is present.
Time Power
- Replaced the previous ground magic circle with an astral clock that displays the current in-game time.
- The clock includes markings, hands, sun and moon indicators, sweeping light, and stardust.
- During stopped time, the hands freeze and an icy blue ring appears.
- The clock scales with the dragon’s size and growth, with improved synchronization as time changes.
Meteor Shower and Magic Circles
- Improved meteor, trail, and explosion visuals.
- Fixed incorrect frame interpolation that could make meteor animations appear to jump in some versions.
- Further revised general magic circle visuals and rendering.
- Improved synchronization and cleanup of ability effects across dimensions and in multiplayer.
Gameplay and Balance
- Gravitational Field and Stardust Armor can now be activated while airborne.
- The default base starlight recovery rate changed from
0.005to0.013; default acceleration strength changed from1.0to0.0. - The starlight exhaustion penalty interval changed from 20 ticks to 40 ticks.
- Adjusted how some level-dependent Stardust Armor and Supernova values are calculated.
JEI and Other Improvements
- Star Surge Breath conversion recipes are now collected from ability data instead of a fixed hard-coded list, and the JEI recipe display has been updated.
- Improved kill attribution for fall damage after a white hole releases a target.
- Added or adjusted assets, settings, and localization for the white hole and other updated effects.

1. New & Reworked
1. Sixteen Dedicated Damage Types + Death Messages (2.2.x)
- Every ability and constellation now has its own
star_dragon:damage type (black hole accretion, star laser, stellar breath, supernova, Aries' golden horns, Scorpio's venom, Pisces' star tide, and more — 16 new plus the 3 existing ones). - All 12 languages now provide
death.attack.*messages and.playervariants, so each ability shows its own death message. - Kill credit fixed: kills by Starlight summons, Gemini phantoms and black holes now count as player kills — XP, player-only drops (e.g. wither skeleton skulls),
killed_by_playerloot conditions and related advancements all work.
2. Music Disc — "Melody of the Star Dragon" (2.2.x)
- New RARE music disc, 3:08 long, playable in a jukebox.
- How to get it: use Stellar Breath on any vanilla music disc (
#star_dragon:music_discs, all 19 vanilla discs) to convert it into "Melody of the Star Dragon". - Also available from the creative inventory.
3. Client Quality / Performance Settings (from 2.0.4, expanded in 2.2.x)
All adjustable in-game, no config file editing:
- Stellar Laser, black hole, meteor shower, supernova, Star Cube sparkle, Cancer/Gemini particles;
- Stellar Breath particles, breath constellation links, casting starfield overlay;
- gravity field domain, Stardust Armor planet rings.
Each has High / Medium / Low; lower settings turn off or reduce the effect, so low-end PCs can still play.
4. Gravity Field Rework (around 2.0.7)
- A visible gravity domain: gravity is halved inside, falling is slower and movement is impeded, simulating space;
- allies inside gain buffs that expire immediately on leaving;
- cross-dimension persistence and cleanup fixed — the domain no longer lingers after changing dimensions.
5. Stardust Armor Rework (around 2.0.7)
- New planet-ring visual; grants damage reduction, a yellow-heart shield, bonus max health and health regeneration to nearby allies;
- state sync reworked so other players see the aura correctly;
- the planet rings have their own quality setting.
6. Stellar Breath Stream + Casting Starfield (2.1.0)
- Stellar Breath now emits "star stream" particles: core stars, sparks and dust, with glowing constellation lines between nearby core stars (can be toggled);
- while casting, a blue gradient and constellation stars appear around the screen edges (can be turned off);
- dependencies updated: Dragon Survival 2.0.71, GeckoLib 4.9.3, Tooltip Overhaul 2.0.5.
7. Rebindable Constellation Wheel + Config UI Rework (around 2.0.7)
- "Open Constellation Wheel" is now in the vanilla key bind screen: Options → Controls → Key Binds → Star Dragon, default middle mouse; keyboard or mouse keys both work;
- client and server config screens unified into list + slider + input field layouts; server settings editable in-game;
- config tooltips no longer show raw translation keys.
8. Magic Circle Rendering Rework (2.0.4)
- Time ability, star laser and time stop circles moved from particles to a renderer — cleaner edges and steadier performance;
- fixed "ghost circles": a player in another dimension no longer sees a magic circle appear under their feet;
- 2.2.4 further consolidates star clock creation, clearing and syncing into a single
clearAllpacket, making dimension changes cleaner.
9. Block Destruction Protection Rework (2.0.4 / 2.0.5)
- Default mode is now
PARTIAL_PROTECTION(respects block break events such as WorldGuard or arena plugins); - global setting plus per-ability settings (black hole, supernova, true gravity field, star laser);
- decoupled from FTB Chunks:
FTB_FORBIDonly affects claimed chunks,OFFdisables everything; - black hole suction and explosion now share the same protection check, so the explosion no longer bypasses it.
10. Starlight Summon Changes (from 2.0.6)
- Summon cap 3 + 3 per level; 10-second summon interval;
- summoning while full or on cooldown shows a hint and refunds mana; sneaking to dismiss is not affected by the cooldown.
11. Ten New Languages (2.0.6)
German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil / Portugal), Russian and Traditional Chinese (HK / TW) were added; with English and Simplified Chinese, the mod now ships 12 languages.
12. Custom Skin Expansion (2.0.4)
More than 20 new eye parts and other appearance options; default skin parts for the four growth stages were adjusted as well.
13. 2.2.0 Visibility & Visual Improvements
- Meteor Shower syncs to each player's view distance (128–576 blocks) and fades in fog like everything else;
- black hole visible range raised from 64 to up to 512 blocks; it stops at solid blocks and keeps eating blocks even when no creatures are inside;
- explosion flash uses the same range, so distant players see it too.
14. Recipes / Tags / Misc
- Fixed the Star Sky Brick wall recipe; Star Source of Magic now accepts any star ore (
#star_dragon:star_ores); - star ores added to block/item tags for JEI and other mods;
- item tooltip star sparkles now scale with tooltip size — no more overcrowding in small boxes or stuck stars after resizing;
- death message, Sagittarius and item name localization fixes.
2. Balance Changes
2.2.0 — ability damage and growth reduced across the board
Values are base value plus per-level increase. Black hole values are unchanged.
| Ability | Value | Before | After |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meteor Shower | Damage | 250 (+50) | 25 (+5) |
| Stellar Laser | Damage (both hits) | 30 (+10) | 9 (+3) |
| Starbound Projection | Damage | 20 (+10) | 8 (+2) |
| Stellar Breath | Damage | 30 (+10) | 9 (+3) |
| Stardust Armor | Duration | 1200 ticks / 60 s (+400 / +20 s) | 600 ticks / 30 s (+200 / +10 s) |
| Stardust Armor | Cooldown | 300 ticks / 15 s | 1000 ticks / 50 s |
| Gravitational Field | Attack damage bonus | +10 (+20) | +2 (+2) |
| Gravitational Field | Attack speed bonus | +10 (+20) | +0.5 (+0.5) |
| Gravitational Field | Dragon ability damage bonus | +0.5 (+0.5) | +0.1 (+0.1) |
| Starlight (summon) | Damage over time | 10 (+5) | 4 (+1) |
| Starlight (summon) | Explosion damage | 20 (+10) | 10 (+3) |
| Constellation Power | Explosion damage percent | 0.5 (+0.1) | 5 (+1) |
| Starlight Mark | Attack damage per level | +10 | +1 (base unchanged) |
Star Cubes: starlight bonus per nearby cube 0.05 → 0.1. The bonus is applied after sky/weather multipliers, making it the only way to keep starlight up at noon; the new values are tuned so 5 cubes stop decay, 6 start recovery, and 10 keep full starlight even at noon.
2.2.4 — starlight pacing and costs
- Faster natural starlight recovery: base increase rate 0.005 → 0.013;
- Removed the "faster the further from 50%" acceleration (acceleration strength 1.0 → 0.0); starlight now rises and falls more linearly and predictably;
- Starlight exhaustion damage interval 20 → 40 ticks (1 s → 2 s), so low starlight is less punishing;
- Stardust Armor regeneration interval now scales linearly by level (25 ticks base, -11 per level);
- Supernova continuous mana cost now scales linearly (0.15 base, -0.04 per level; cheaper at high levels).
Taurus (2.0.4)
Reflect changed from a fixed "earth wave" damage to enemy's raw damage × reflect percentage (30% base). Reflect is computed from the raw damage before your damage reduction is applied, making standing your ground more consistent.
Mana Costs (around 2.0.7)
Mana cost curves were adjusted for black hole, gravitational field, meteor shower, star laser, star magic, starbound projection, starlight, supernova and true gravity field.
3. Fixes
2.2.0
- Meteor Shower: late-joining players now see the correct progress instead of replaying the whole shower;
- Meteor Shower: two showers on the same spot no longer overwrite each other's data (tracked by caster instead of impact position);
- Black hole explosion now respects block destruction protection settings;
- Fixed an old server-freeze issue where the black hole ran its logic once per creature, growing quadratically; it now runs once per tick.
2.2.x
- Kill credit: summon and black hole kills no longer lose XP, drops or advancement progress;
- Cross-dimension magic circles: another dimension's cast no longer appears under your feet;
- Cross-dimension cleanup: gravity fields and Stardust Armor are properly cleared when changing dimensions;
- protection checks no longer trigger
block_brokenadvancements or remove Star Cube indices prematurely; - death message, Sagittarius and item name localization fixes;
- a batch of rendering/logic fixes for the black hole accretion disk, meteor targeting, constellation info panel, star laser and Starlight entities;
- Star Sky Brick wall and Star Source of Magic recipe fixes;
- client config tooltips showing raw translation keys;
- item tooltip sparkles overcrowding small tooltips and misaligning on resize;
- a batch of earlier hidden issues: protection-check side effects, Star Cube network sync, starlight calculation, ability/constellation state, client flow and JSON resources.
4. Performance
Main improvements included in 2.2.0:
- Meteor Shower network traffic cut by roughly an order of magnitude: the full impact table is sent once on entering range, then only a ~20-byte progress heartbeat per second;
- Star Cubes no longer generate any network traffic: no more server-wide broadcasts on place/break, and no full list on login or dimension change;
- Smoother black hole movement through terrain: sucked blocks are batched and distance-culled; blocks beyond 96 blocks are skipped;
- The black hole no longer rebuilds its lens texture every frame (previously an ~8 MB full-screen texture allocation per frame);
- Black holes further than 160 blocks skip full-screen lensing, drawing only the base sphere and accretion disk;
- Stellar Breath, casting starfield, gravity field and Stardust Armor rings all have quality settings to reduce cost;
- magic circles now use a renderer instead of particles, giving steadier draw cost.
5. Compatibility
- Update client and server together. Since 2.2.0 the client/server protocol changed (meteor progress packets, black hole entity, damage types), so mixing versions will not work.
- Required: Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge 21.1.224+, Dragon Survival 2.0.71+, GeckoLib 4.9.3+.
- The Dragon Survival page on Modrinth is outdated at 2.0.54 (2026-05-18), below this mod's minimum of 2.0.68. Download 2.0.71+ from CurseForge; do not use the 2.0.54 build that Modrinth may install automatically, or Star Dragon will refuse to load because of the dependency version.
- Do not install GeckoAnimFix or Trinkets and Baubles — Dragon Survival declares them incompatible.
- Optional: JEI (star conversion recipes), FTB Chunks (claim protection), Tooltip Overhaul 2.0.5 (item tooltips).
- Block protection:
PARTIAL_PROTECTIONis based onBreakEventand works with WorldGuard-style plugins;FTB_FORBIDonly affects claimed chunks;OFFdisables all. - Back up your world before upgrading; if coming from 2.0.2 or older, remove the old jar before adding the new one.
Projects on Modrinth are automatically available through a Maven repository for use with JVM build tools such as Gradle. To learn more about the Modrinth Maven API, click here.
Note: When available, you should use the creator's maven repo instead as it will have transitive dependency information that the Modrinth Maven API does not. You may also end up with duplicate dependencies if you use a mix of Modrinth and non-Modrinth Maven repositories for your dependencies, because the group identifier will be different when served through the Modrinth Maven API.
