Inside the Darkness - Horror

1.3.0 — Survival Horror Rework

A major rework focused on atmosphere, threatening encounters and a more consistent survival experience.

Minecraft remains on 1.20.1. Forge has been updated from 47.4.0 to 47.4.20.

The installed mod inventory has been reduced from 235 to 158 archives, excluding generated Connector caches: 23 additions, 100 removals and 65 updated or patched files.

Horror and survival

• Replaced the original The Anomaly with The Anomaly Rephased.
• Added Distant Friends, Eyes in the Darkness, The One Who Watches and Nyf’s Spiders.
• Kept From The Fog, The Man From The Fog, Better Cave Dweller, The Midnight Lurker, The Pale Hound and Slenderman: The Revival.
• Set The Knocker to its rare spawning mode, independently of the selected difficulty.
• Reduced The Midnight Lurker’s Overworld, Nether and gateway spawn settings.
• Adjusted The Man From The Fog to spawn less frequently and only at night, disabled its lightning effects and slowed its block breaking.
• Added a default Cave Dweller configuration with a 5–10 minute spawn timer and a possible 17-minute additional cooldown.
• Added block protection rules for supported horror entities. The Pale Hound can still break fragile materials, including glass, wooden building blocks, doors and leaves.
• Disabled From The Fog’s base-burning and torch-breaking events through pack-specific overrides.
• Added a starter kit containing five cooked beef for a player’s first arrival.

World generation and exploration

• Replaced Terralith with Biomas Vanilla Renovados for a world closer to vanilla Minecraft.
• Updated Tectonic and added YUNG’s Better Caves.
• Kept YUNG’s Better Dungeons, Better Mineshafts and Better Strongholds.
• Removed many additional structure packs, biome additions, bosses and equipment mods to reduce competing content.
• Added Enhanced Celestials 2: Core and Default Lunar Events.
• Configured Blood Moons with a minimum interval of 8 nights and a 1.5× monster spawning multiplier.
• Configured Super Blood Moons with a minimum interval of 32 nights, a full-moon requirement and a 2× monster spawning multiplier.

Immersion and presentation

• Added First-person Model and 3D Skin Layers.
• Added Panda’s Falling Trees and Spawn Animations.
• Added Particle Rain, with reduced particle density and a maximum of 700 particles.
• Disabled Particle Rain’s additional fog and dust-haze effects.
• Added Sound Physics Remastered with adjusted reverberation settings.
• Added Entity Model Features and Entity Texture Features.
• Adjusted Better Animations Collection’s entity exclusions to avoid conflicts with custom entity models.
• Reworked the main menu, title, loading screens and pause menu.
• Updated Discord Rich Presence through CraftPresence.
• Reworked BetterF3 with clearer colours, coloured coordinates, a separate days-played line, white FPS text and CPU/GPU information.

Music

• Added the Inside the Darkness Ambient Music resource pack.
• Replaced vanilla background music with eight dark ambient tracks, using Minecraft’s normal playback timing and silent intervals.
• Preserved gameplay sounds, creatures, footsteps, weather effects and music discs.
• Added a separate FancyMenu soundtrack using The Distant Sun — Scott Buckley.

Included ambient tracks:

• Horror Atmosphere / Post Apocalyptic Wastelands
• Ancient Caverns
• EmptyCity
• Factory Ambiance
• Searching
• Dark Ambient Drone
• Dark Ambient Loop 13
• Dark Ambiance

Performance and compatibility

• Disabled Entity Culling’s tick culling to address interrupted entity movement and delayed hit reactions. Rendering culling remains enabled.
• Set the default simulation distance to 8 chunks, render distance to 12 chunks and FPS limit to 120.
• Disabled shaders by default; players can enable them in the video settings.
• Changed Sodium Dynamic Lights from REALTIME to FAST mode.
• Applied pack-specific fixes to BetterF3, Dynamic FPS and Sodium Dynamic Lights.
• Added Darkness Tweaks and global datapacks for the starter kit, compatibility fixes and block protection.
• Added a compatibility resource pack containing door-model, lantern-model, texture-atlas and sound-definition fixes.
• Corrected an invalid From The Fog function.
• Added spark for performance profiling.
• Removed obsolete mod configurations, old key bindings, configuration backups and generated Connector files from the export.
• Added a consolidated Credits and Licenses PDF containing the inventory and third-party notices.

Resource packs and shaders

Added:

• Fast Better Grass
• Dot Crosshair
• Patrix 32× — optional
• Inside the Darkness Ambient Music
• Inside the Darkness Compatibility Fixes
• Solas Shader

Updated:

• Motschen’s Better Leaves: 9.2 → 9.6
• No More Clouds: 0.1.3 → 0.1.10
• New Hearts: 1.3–1.9 archive → 1.9–1.20.1 archive
• BSL: 8.4.02.2 → 10.1.8
• Complementary Reimagined: r5.4 → r5.9.3

Removed:

• Just Fancy Torches
• Environmental Water
• Spryzeen’s Knight Armor
• SE Vanilla Consistency
• Chocapic13 V9.1 Extreme beta 5
• MakeUp Ultra Fast
• Old shader settings files

Retained:

• Even Better Enchants
• More Cave Sounds
• Insanity Shader

Patrix remains optional and disabled by default. It requires stronger hardware and should not be combined with Insanity Shader.

Important compatibility notes

• A new world is recommended because world generation has changed and many content mods have been removed.
• Enhanced Celestials 2: Shader Support is not included in this release. Its shader-specific moon-colour integration requires the separate extension.
• Shaders remain optional and are disabled by default.
