Mallarad's Enchantment Rework
A complete rework of Minecraft's enchanting and experience system.
This mod fixes Minecraft's enchanting and experience system by removing randomness, rewarding exploration, and giving players meaningful choices when improving their equipment.
Inspired by Minecraft Ideas Academy.
What changed?
- Enchantments are selected, not randomly rolled
- Nearly every block drops experience
- New enchantments to create alternative playstyles
- Chiseled bookshelves teach treasure enchantments to the enchanting table
Features
Deterministic Enchanting
The enchanting table is no longer random.

The enchanting table now shows every available enchantment. You can choose exactly which enchantment to apply and upgrade it one level at a time.
Anvil-only equipment like Shields and Elytras can now be enchanted in an enchanting table now.
More Experience Rewards
Nearly every block in the game can now drop experience. Experience chances are based on hardness.
Certain blocks provide bonus experience rewards:
- Fully grown crops
- Amethyst clusters
- Brushing Suspicious blocks
Grindstones also refund significantly more experience when disenchanting, making those previously useless enchanted items you find while exploring grant a huge XP boost. This also allows for more experimentation.
Rebalanced Experience Curve
Since enchanting no longer encourages you to sit at 30 levels, it now always takes the same amount of XP to level up - 18. This means getting to level 100 is about the same cost as getting from 1 to 30 in vanilla.
New Enchantments
Momentum (Tools)
Mutually exlusive to Efficiency and Surging.
Mining speed increases continuously while mining blocks of the same type. The longer you mine, the faster you become. Breaking another block loses all of your momentum.
Surging (Tools)
Mutually exclusive to Efficiency and Momentum.
Starts with extremely high mining speed, but slows down quickly. Mining speed recovers while you are not mining.
Flurry (Weapons)
Mutually exclusive to Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Impaling, Density, and Breach. Increases weapon attack speed
Flame Touch (Tools)
Mutually exclusive to Silk Touch.
A treasure enchantment found in Desert Temples.
Automatically smelts blocks mined at the cost of hunger.
Air Affinity (Helmet)
Mutually exclusive to Aqua Affinity.
A treasure enchantment found in Villages.
Improves mining speed while your feet are not touching the ground, including while on a mount.
Towering Step (Leggings)
Mutually exclusive to Swift Sneak.
A treasure enchantment found in Pillager Outposts.
Allows the player to step up full blocks.
Magma Strider (Boots)
Mutually exclusive to Depth Strider, Frost Walker, and Crust Walker.
A treasure enchantment found in Ruined Nether Portals.
Increases movement speed while in lava.
Crust Walker (Boots)
Mutually exclusive to Depth Strider, Frost Walker, and Magma Strider.
A treasure enchantment found in Nether Fortresses.
Creates temporary basalt pathways across lava lakes, similar to Frost Walker.
Keeping (All equipment)
A treasure enchantment found in Ancient Cities.
Allows the enchanted item to remain in your inventory after death. Each death reduces the enchantment level by one.
Preserving (All equipment)
Mutually exclusive to Mending.
Caps the XP cost to repair items in an anvil. No more "Too Expensive!"
Treasure Enchantments
Treasure enchantments can now be "taught" to the enchanting table by placing enchanted books with those enchantments in nearby chiseled bookshelves. Filled chiseled bookshelves also grant enchantment power to the enchanting table.
To complement this, Depth Strider and Aqua Affinity were made treasure, and can be found in buried treasure chests.
Mending is no longer treasure.
Here's a consolodated list of all treasure enchantments and their locations:
- Aqua Affinity: Buried Treasures
- Depth Strider: Buried Treasures
- Air Affinity: Villages
- Towering Step: Pillager Outpost
- Frost Walker: Igloos and Snowy Villages
- Flame Touch: Desert Temples
- Swift Sneak: Ancient Cities
- Keeping: Ancient Cities
- Magma Strider: Ruined Nether Portals
- Crust Walker: Nether Fortresses
- Soul Speed: Bastions
- Wind Burst: Trial Chambers
Equipment Improvements
- Axes and Tridents can now get all sword enchantments except Sweeping Edge.
- Bows can get Crossbow enchantments
- Crossbows can get Bow enchantments.
- Power and Quick charge are mutually exclusive.
- Mending and Infinity are no longer mutually exclusive.
Repair Materials
To complement Preserving, some items needed improved repair materials.
- Netherite can be repaired with Netherite Scrap or Diamonds.
- Elytras can once again be repaired by Leather.
- Tridents can be repaired with Prismarine Shards or Crystals.
Forgiving Deaths
You drop half of your experience on death, instead of it being capped at 7 levels.
