Cute Difficult
"Cruel Universe Tortures Everyone"
Minecraft is too easy. Zombies are dumb. Creepers are visible from a mile away. Furnaces don't explode. Foxes don't kill you with fireballs for the wrong offering.
This mod fixes all of that.
TL;DR
A brutal Shinto-inspired difficulty mod where the only path to power is befriending 9 elemental kitsune spirits. They have opinions. They have grudges. They have fireballs.
If it gets too rough, type i am casual in chat. Nobody will judge you. The kitsune will. But I won't.
The three layers
1. A cruel world. Hostile mobs are smarter and meaner. Creepers spawn charged and invisible. Furnaces overheat and explode. Chests are half-empty (math, not a bug). Villagers price-gouge. Crafting tables sabotage your recipes 15% of the time. Even your Totem of Undying is now a gamble — right-click for a random buff instead of guaranteed save.
2. Nine kitsune spirits. Each tied to an element (fire, water, earth, wind, lightning, forest, ice, spirit, sky). Each with their own kami, their own offering, their own personality. Feed them correctly to earn trust. Pet them. Name them. Watch their kits play beside them.
But — they remember. Kill one and every kitsune nearby will mark you forever. No amount of gifts brings back broken trust.
3. Item quality. Every sword, tool, and armor rolls into one of 5 tiers when it enters your inventory. A Masterwork iron sword outdamages a Crude diamond one. Hunt for tier, not just material.
The path to Inari's grace
Each kitsune element has its own Blessing — a passive status effect you keep when your Spirit in that element reaches 10. Fire Resistance from Kasai, Water Breathing from Mizu, Speed from Kaze, Strength from Kaminari, Regeneration from Mori... all nine can stack.
When all 9 are active simultaneously, the Great Blessing of Inari ignites. Regeneration II, Saturation, AND universal peace with every kitsune — even those who watched you kill their sisters. The world finally says "okay, you did good."
But raise a hand against a kitsune and it'll fight back. The Great Blessing grants life, not a license to kill.
What kitsune do
Even a 1-tail kitsune changes the world around it through its element:
- Kasai melts ice and snow in a 6-block radius. Immune to fire.
- Mizu puts out fires, hydrates farmland. Never drowns.
- Mori speeds plant growth by ~50%. Cleanses poison from itself.
- Kaminari strikes random hostile mobs with lightning. Immune to lightning.
- Kori freezes water into packed ice. Immune to freeze damage.
- Yurei teleports periodically. Immune to magic and wither.
- Tengoku drives off phantoms, weakens nearby hostiles. Glows in the dark.
- Daichi restores stone from cobble. Doesn't suffocate.
- Kaze softly pushes entities away. Immune to fall damage.
Higher-tail kitsune get active attacks: fireballs, ice beams, lightning, in three flavors (single-target, AOE rings, 14-block piercing beams). A 9-tail Kyuubi is basically a small god.
The friendship arc
- Feed the right offering → +Trust, +Spirit
- Pet at Trust 30 (right-click empty hand) → +1 Trust per hour
- Sleep with at Trust 50 — at night, the fox curls up next to you. This is the most important feature in the mod.
- Name with a name tag — the name biases its personality forever
- Watch kits play — friendly adults have a 30% chance to birth babies
If you kill the mom, the kits sit at her body for 30 seconds and weep blue tear particles. Don't do that.
The sky hates you too
Three celestial systems layer on top of everything. Nine special moons (Blood, Pumpkin, Harvest, Frost, Wolf, Mirror, Cursed, Blue, Hollow) and six weather events (Acid Rain, Thunderstorm, Blizzard, Heatwave, Fog, Meteor Shower) each pair a threat with a reward — and they form named combos when they coincide.
And then there's astrology: nine celestial bodies on real orbits, forming aspects whose exact angle determines how generous (or hostile) the spirits are to each element. They go retrograde, sit in decans, and occasionally align. Read it all with /cd sky. Track it like a science, or offer blind and let the stars punish you. There's even a hidden rite for those who keep a star journal.
Enhanced enchantments
Give a kitsune your enchanted gear and it transforms the enchantment into a meme-named, buffed version — Thor, Son of Odin, Nanomachines, son!, Sub-Zero, Let's dance!, and 18 more. Blessings stack on one item. (Don't use a book — anvils strip the magic. Bless the gear directly.)

This is v1.1.0-beta, the Cosmic Update. There will be bugs. Report them and I'll fix them. Or don't, and let the kitsune remember.
