Fear of Sound
Fear of Sound is a Forge mod that brings your world to life by making mobs dynamically react to nearby noises and threats. Instead of just running away, creatures can look for cover, hide, and freeze in place while danger is nearby! Some mobs can still play dead, like a fainting goat. This adds a new layer of immersion and stealth gameplay, as your actions can startle creatures and influence their behavior in unique ways.
This is the opposite of Attract To Sound Mod.
Features
-
Adaptive Fear System
Mobs react to nearby sounds and visible threats. Depending on the danger, they may become alert, seek cover, freeze while the threat remains nearby, and recover once it passes. -
Hide, Freeze, or Play Dead!
Not all mobs react the same way! Configure creatures to seek cover and freeze, or keep the classic play dead behavior. If a mob cannot find a safe hiding spot, it can fall back to fleeing. -
Scent Awareness
With Sound Attract installed, mobs can notice nearby scent trails and turn toward the scent clues they detect. Repeated, strong, fresh scents can make them seek cover. Scent behavior uses Sound Attract’s generic scent data and does not require Weather2 or Spoiled. -
Powerful Bypass System
Want to keep your pets or special mobs safe? Bypass any mob using a Custom Name or specific NBT data. A mob named "Pet" or one that is{Silent:1b}can be configured to ignore all sounds! -
Advanced Fear Rules
Create rules for specific mobs, sounds, NBT data, or health conditions. This lets you tailor fear behavior to the creature and situation. -
Highly Configurable
Nearly every aspect is adjustable via the.tomlconfig file. Tweak sound properties, block muffling values, player step sounds, scent awareness, and entity lists to tailor the experience to your exact liking. -
Performance-Friendly Caching
Fear of Sound uses bounded caches to reduce repeated lookups. Quantified can optionally provide cache integration; Fear of Sound continues to work without it. -
Built-in Mod Support
Optional integration for Sound Attract, Simple Voice Chat, Tacz, and Quantified is included, with easy ways to add sounds from other mods. Sound Attract 7.0.2–7.x is supported.
Installation
- Ensure you have Minecraft Forge for 1.20.1 installed.
- Download the latest Fear of Sound mod
.jarfile. - Place the
.jarfile into yourmods/directory. - Launch Minecraft with the Forge profile.
Configuration
Once installed, a detailed configuration file will be generated at config/fear_of_sound-common.toml. You can also use the in-game Mod Options menu. You can configure:
- Bypassed Mobs: Define which mobs to ignore based on their custom name or NBT tags.
- Fear Reactions: Use the
affectedEntitieslist for adaptive hide-and-freeze behavior or theplayDeadEntitieslist for the classic fainting reaction. - Sound Properties: Add custom sounds from other mods and define their scare range and weight.
- Scent Awareness: Adjust the radius and age of scent clues used by mobs. This feature requires Sound Attract.
- Advanced Fear Rules: Set conditions using entity type, NBT data, health, and sound.
- Block Muffling: Change how much sound is blocked by wool, solid, and thin blocks.
Compatibility
- Designed for Forge 1.20.1 (tested with 47.4.0).
- Sound Attract, Simple Voice Chat, Tacz, and Quantified are optional integrations; the mod does not require them to launch.
- Scent awareness requires Sound Attract 7.0.2–7.x.
- Should work alongside most sound or AI mods, provided they do not add conflicting high-priority AI goals.
- No additional mods are required beyond Forge and Minecraft.
