Chat Toggler ā A lightweight Minecraft server plugin originally created for the SmileSMP.
Chat Mode is a lightweight Minecraft server plugin that lets staff control who is allowed to use public chat. It is useful for chat lockdowns, moderation situations, events, punishments, or temporary server-wide silence.
When Chat Mode is enabled, only players specifically added to the allowed-chat list can send messages. Everyone else is prevented from chatting until they are given permission or Chat Mode is disabled.
⨠Features
š Server-wide Chat Mode
Enable or disable restricted chat at any time. When enabled, only approved players can send messages. When disabled, everyone can chat normally.
š¤ Individual Chat Permissions
Add or remove individual players from the allowed-chat list. Players are identified using their UUID, meaning their permission remains associated with them even if they change their Minecraft username.
š¬ Private Message Blocking
Optionally prevents players who aren't allowed to chat from using private messaging commands such as /msg. This helps ensure that a chat lockdown actually keeps restricted players quiet.
š ļø Simple Commands
Manage Chat Mode and allowed players directly in-game.
š Persistent Player List
Allowed players are stored in chatplayers.yml. You normally don't need to edit the file manually.
š Debug Mode
Optional debug messages let you see when commands succeed or fail. Useful for server administration and troubleshooting. š Commands /chatmode <enable|disable>
Enables or disables Chat Mode.
Enabled: Only players listed in chatplayers.yml can send messages.
Disabled: Everyone can chat normally.
/chatplayer <add|remove> <username>
Adds or removes a player from the allowed-to-chat list.
Examples:
/chatplayer add Steve /chatplayer remove Steve
The player's UUID is automatically stored in chatplayers.yml.
/getchatmodestatus
Displays whether Chat Mode is currently enabled or disabled.
/getchatplayer <username>
Checks whether a specific player is currently allowed to chat.
āļø Configuration
The main configuration allows you to control Chat Mode and private-message blocking.
Enabled: true Disableprivatemessages: true debug: true
Enabled
Controls whether Chat Mode is active.
Enabled: true
Only players on the allowed list can chat.
Enabled: false
Everyone can chat normally.
Disableprivatemessages
Controls whether restricted players are prevented from sending private messages.
Disableprivatemessages: true
It is recommended to keep this enabled while Chat Mode is active. Otherwise, players who cannot use public chat may still be able to communicate through /msg or similar private-message functionality.
debug
Enables additional information about plugin actions.
debug: true Note: This setting requires a server restart after changing it. There is currently no in-game command for changing this option.
For example, when adding a player with /chatplayer add <username>, debug mode can provide confirmation that the player was successfully added.
š Files config.yml
Contains the main Chat Mode settings.
chatplayers.yml
Stores the UUIDs of players who are allowed to chat while Chat Mode is enabled.
Example:
chatplayers: 8667ba71-b85a-4004-af54-457a9734eed7:
You normally do not need to edit this file manually. Use /chatplayer add and /chatplayer remove instead.
š Why UUIDs?
Chat Mode uses Minecraft UUIDs instead of usernames to identify players.
A player's username can change, but their UUID normally remains the same. This means their allowed-chat status stays associated with their account even after changing their Minecraft username.
šÆ Use Cases
Chat Mode can be useful for:
Server-wide chat lockdowns Moderation situations Events where only certain players should speak Temporary punishments Staff-controlled discussions Preventing chat during announcements or important events Keeping players quiet while still allowing selected players to communicate š ļø Example
You want to temporarily silence the server while allowing your staff to communicate.
First, enable Chat Mode:
/chatmode enable
Then add your staff members:
/chatplayer add Steve /chatplayer add Alex
Now only Steve and Alex can use public chat.
When the lockdown is over:
/chatmode disable
Everyone can chat normally again.
š Quick Summary Setting Description Enabled: true Only approved players can chat Enabled: false Everyone can chat Disableprivatemessages: true Blocks private messages from restricted players debug: true Shows additional plugin information
Chat Mode gives server staff a simple way to control who can communicate without needing to manually mute players one by one.
