NeoTalk – Modern Minecraft Chat, Made Simple
NeoTalk is a modern, lightweight, and highly customizable chat plugin for Minecraft. It combines clean formatting, interactive chat components, private messaging, item sharing, automated announcements, and live in-game configuration in one focused solution.
NeoTalk is designed for lobbies, SMPs, community servers, and small networks that want a cleaner and more interactive chat experience without relying on a large, overloaded all-in-one plugin.
The project is currently in beta and is being developed step by step, with a strong focus on stability, performance, flexibility, and a polished experience for server owners.
✨ Features
- Modern Adventure-based chat formatting
- Optional LuckPerms prefix and rank integration
- Interactive player names with hover and click actions
- Private messaging with
/msgand/reply - Item sharing with native Minecraft item tooltips
- Custom join and leave messages
- Scheduled server announcements
- GUI-first configuration
- Live configuration changes without server restarts
- Asynchronous configuration saving
- Detailed permission support
- Java 21 and Minecraft 1.20.6+ support
💬 Modern Chat Formatting
NeoTalk replaces Minecraft’s default chat format with a clean, readable, and customizable design.
Example:
[Owner] DasEtwa » Nice Home Bro!
Chat formatting is built with Adventure Components instead of legacy string formatting. This enables interactive features such as:
- Hoverable player names
- Clickable player names
- Rank and prefix display
- MiniMessage formatting
- Future component-based chat features
The default design remains intentionally simple and readable while still offering extensive customization options.
👤 Interactive Player Names
Player names can include hover and click actions.
Hovering over a player name can display information such as:
DasEtwa
Rank: Owner
Click to message
Clicking the name can prepare a private message command:
/msg DasEtwa
This makes chat more interactive without requiring custom clients or resource packs.
LuckPerms integration is optional. If LuckPerms is installed, NeoTalk can use its rank and prefix metadata. Without LuckPerms, NeoTalk continues to work normally.
📨 Private Messaging
NeoTalk includes its own modern private messaging system.
Available commands:
/msg <player> <message>
/reply <message>
Private messages use the same component-based system as public chat, allowing future NeoTalk features to be integrated seamlessly.
Private-message permissions are managed separately from regular chat permissions.
⚔️ Item Sharing
NeoTalk allows players to display the item they are currently holding directly in chat.
Command:
/item
Example output:
DasEtwa is showing [Diamond Slayer]
Hovering over the item displays Minecraft’s native item tooltip, including information such as:
- Custom item names
- Lore
- Enchantments
- Attributes
- Armor values
- Tool information
- Other supported item data
NeoTalk creates a snapshot of the item. The original inventory item is never removed, changed, or modified.
Future versions may support item references directly inside regular messages:
Selling [item] for 20 diamonds.
👋 Join and Leave Messages
Default Minecraft join and leave messages can be replaced with custom NeoTalk messages.
Examples:
Welcome to the server!
or:
DasEtwa joined the server!
Messages support NeoTalk formatting and can be updated live through the runtime configuration.
📢 Automated Announcements
NeoTalk supports scheduled server announcements for:
- Server information
- Rules
- Tips
- Reminders
- Community messages
- Future personalized announcements
Example:
Remember to read /rules!
Announcements are designed with bounded scheduling and rendering to prevent unnecessary background work.
🖥️ GUI-First Configuration
NeoTalk follows a simple configuration philosophy:
Configure visually. Apply changes instantly. Keep server restarts to a minimum.
Configuration editing uses a draft-based workflow:
Edit
→ Preview
→ Apply
→ Validate
→ Activate
→ Persist
This allows multiple settings to be prepared before they are applied to the active configuration.
Most configuration changes do not require a server restart. Configuration files remain available for server owners who prefer manual editing, Git-based workflows, backups, or large copy-and-paste changes.
⚡ Performance by Design
NeoTalk is built to keep chat activity efficient and predictable.
Current design principles include:
- Viewer-independent chat rendering where possible
- Reusable Adventure Components
- Cached LuckPerms metadata
- Bounded reply states
- Bounded configuration editor sessions
- Announcements rendered once per broadcast
- Asynchronous configuration persistence
- No configuration write for every GUI interaction
- Cleanup when players leave
- No unbounded chat-history cache
Performance-sensitive code is reviewed separately from regular feature development.
🔌 Optional Integrations
NeoTalk works as a standalone plugin and does not require additional plugins.
Current optional integrations include:
- LuckPerms
Future Neo ecosystem integrations are planned through shared NeoData functionality. This may allow NeoTalk to exchange selected statistics and player data with other Neo plugins, including NeoTab.
Potential future data points include:
- Messages sent
- Playtime
- Joins
- Replies
- Activity statistics
NeoTalk will always remain usable as an independent plugin.
🔐 Permissions
NeoTalk uses permissions for both administrative and player-facing features.
Example permissions:
neotalk.admin
neotalk.gui
neotalk.reload
neotalk.msg
neotalk.reply
neotalk.item
Additional permissions may be introduced as new features are added.
Administrative functionality is designed not to depend solely on operator status.
✅ Compatibility
Initial targets:
- Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.6+
- Java 21+
- Paper
Purpur support is part of the long-term full-support direction.
Spigot compatibility is planned where the required APIs allow it without compromising the modern Paper implementation.
Folia support is planned for a later release and is being considered in the architecture from the beginning.
The long-term goal is to provide one shared NeoTalk JAR for all supported platforms.
🧪 Beta Releases
NeoTalk is currently under active beta development.
Beta releases are used to test new systems before the first stable release. Testing may include:
- Automated tests
- Manual server testing
- Paper integration testing
- Performance reviews
- Permission reviews
- Lifecycle and reload testing
- Independent code reviews
Beta versions may still contain undiscovered edge cases. Always create a backup of your configuration before updating a production server.
🚀 Planned Features
NeoTalk is intentionally being developed in layers. The goal is to create a small, polished chat core instead of a plugin filled with unfinished features.
Planned additions include:
- Advanced moderation tools
- Word and phrase filtering
- Leetspeak and separator-aware filter normalization
- URL allowlists and denylists
- Context-specific link rules for public chat and
/msg - Safe clickable links
- Improved reply interaction
[item]support inside regular messages- Unicode emoji aliases
- Optional resource-pack emoji glyphs
- Personalized automated messages
- Chat and player statistics
- Shared NeoData integration with other Neo plugins, including NeoTab
- Velocity network chat
- Folia support
🤖 AI-Assisted Development
AI tools are used during NeoTalk’s development for tasks such as:
- Implementation assistance
- Code reviews
- Bug detection
- Test creation
- Explanations
- Architecture reviews
The project remains actively directed, tested, reviewed, and maintained by the project owner.
AI-generated or AI-assisted changes are not assumed to be correct and are tested before release.
🐛 Bug Reports
Have you found a bug, compatibility issue, permission problem, GUI issue, or unexpected behavior?
Please report it through GitHub Issues.
When possible, include:
- NeoTalk version
- Server software and version
- Minecraft version
- Java version
- Installed plugins
- Relevant configuration
- Full console error or log
- Steps to reproduce the issue
GitHub Issues are preferred over Modrinth comments because they are easier to track, reproduce, and resolve.
