# Limitless Chat 1.1.0
If you've ever tried to paste a long NBT command, a detailed lore description, or a server announcement only to have it cut off, this mod removes the hardcoded 256-character chat cap so you can type and paste freely up to 32,500 characters.
Currently available for Forge and Fabric 1.20.1. Requires Cloth Config on the client for the in-game settings GUI.
Features
- Uncapped Chat & Commands: Paste massive commands with complex NBT or write long messages without getting cut off.
- In-Game Settings Screen: Configure all client preferences directly in-game via Mod Menu (Fabric), the Mods list (Forge), or
/limitless config. - Customizable [Read More] Books: Incoming messages that exceed the threshold fold into a clickable
[Click to Read More]preview that opens a book interface. You can change the character threshold (20–32,500), turn books off entirely. - Smart Vanilla Server Fallback: When joining a server without the mod, your client automatically splits long messages and roleplay/whisper commands (
/tell <player>,/w,/msg,/me, etc.) at word boundaries into 256-character chunks with a configurable delay to prevent spam kicks. - Independent Server Limits: Server owners can enforce different limits for public chat vs. commands (e.g. 500 characters for chat, 32,500 for commands).
- Live Character Counter: Displays your current character count in the chat box (always, only when exceeded, or hidden) with real-time color warnings when approaching or exceeding limits.
- Permissions & Bypasses: Restrict long messages with the
limitless.bypasspermission node, or grant world-specific player bypasses via commands. (Singleplayer defaults to the full 32,500 character cap). - Supported 11 languages (English, German, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian, and Simplified Chinese).
Configuration
Client options are managed in-game or stored in config/limitless-client.json.
Server limits are managed in config/limitless.toml (Singleplayer ignores these limits and defaults to the 32,500 cap):
[server]
# Max length for normal public chat messages. (-1 for unlimited)
max_chat_length = 500
# Max length for commands starting with '/'.
max_command_length = 32500
# Allow commands longer than 256 characters.
enable_long_commands = true
# Permission node required to bypass limits. Leave empty ("") to let everyone bypass.
permission_required = "limitless.bypass"
Commands
| Command | Who can run it | What it does |
|---|---|---|
/limitless config |
Everyone | Opens the in-game settings GUI. |
/limitless cancel |
Everyone | Clears your pending message queue when chunking on a vanilla server. |
/limitless bypass <player> |
OPs / Console | Grants a player a permanent bypass to server limits in that world. |
/limitless unbypass <player> |
OPs / Console | Revokes a player's bypass. |
Installation Requirements
- Client + Server: Install on both sides for the full experience. The client-side mod unlocks typing past 256 characters, while the server-side mod receives and processes long packets natively without delay.
- Client Dependency: Requires Cloth Config on the client for the configuration GUI.
FAQ
Why 32,500 characters instead of truly unlimited?
Minecraft's networking protocol cannot transmit a single string packet larger than 32,767 bytes. A 32,500-character cap leaves necessary headroom for packet framing and JSON formatting without breaking network compatibility.
Does this work with other chat mods?
Yes (hopefully). Limitless only adjusts the input box cap, packet transport, and large-text collapsing. Mods that customize chat rendering, tabs, or styling work alongside it normally.
Will you backport to 1.16.5 or older versions?
Currently, development is focused on modern versions (1.20.1+). Backports may be considered in the future based on demand.
