Curses Revamped
Vanilla curses are no longer throwaway enchantments.
Curses Revamped is the Base version of the mod. It keeps the focus on Minecraft's two vanilla curses: Curse of Vanishing and Curse of Binding.
Instead of adding a large content pack by itself, Base makes the vanilla curse system more meaningful, mostly server-side, and provides the shared foundation for the separate Curses Revamped: Additional Curses addon.
Client And Server
Base is mostly server-side.
On a server, clients generally do not need the Base mod to join. If players install Base client-side, they get extra tooltip/debug support for the vanilla curse reworks.
Players who also use Additional should install both mods on the server and client because Additional adds custom UI, fake curse tooltips, scrambled curse names, and research screens.
Curse of Vanishing Rework
Curse of Vanishing
Curse of Vanishing is no longer only a death punishment.
When a cursed item loses durability, it has a chance to vanish immediately. The lower the item's durability gets, the more dangerous the curse becomes.
This makes Vanishing matter in normal survival and even hardcore, where the vanilla "vanish on death" behavior often does not matter because dying is already the end.
Curse of Binding Rework
Curse of Binding
Curse of Binding now leans into the idea that the item does not want to break or leave you.
Binding checks your worn armor and can combine defensive stats, enchantments, and active effects to make the bound item harder to destroy.
The stronger your worn gear is, the harder it can be to destroy the cursed Binding item.
Mending Support
Mending on worn armor can also help repair the bound item.
Level 1 Mending is intentionally reduced so it stays useful without becoming free durability forever.
Shared 1.2 Foundation
Shared Base Systems
In 1.2, Base became the shared foundation for the addon.
Base owns shared systems such as:
- Vanilla curse behavior
- Vanilla curse tooltip support
- Shared cursed boon data
- Shared curse discovery data
- Admin/debug command support
- Hidden config defaults
The Additional addon uses these shared systems instead of duplicating them.
Debug Command
Version 1.2 adds:
/cursesrevamped debug item
This command helps admins and creative testers inspect the held item's enchantments, curse data, boon data, and debug information.
Config
Hidden Config
Base uses a plain hidden config file:
cursesrevamped.properties
These settings are intentionally not exposed through Mod Menu.
creativeDiscoveryBypass=false by default means Creative mode follows the same discovery rules as Survival, so the unlearn command can be tested properly. Set it to true when Creative players should always see every curse for testing.
The Base config includes options for vanilla curse debug messages and shared settings used by the Additional addon.
Important For 1.2+
Curses Revamped: Additional Curses requires Curses Revamped Base 1.2 or newer.
Base can be used alone. Additional cannot be used alone.
For Additional, install the matching Base and Additional files for your loader:
- Fabric: Curses Revamped Base + Curses Revamped Additional
- NeoForge: Curses Revamped Base + Curses Revamped Additional
Additional Page Description
Summary
Addon for Curses Revamped that adds new, hidden, and dangerous curses with research, fake enchantments, cursed books, and Ominous Offering.
Description
Curses Revamped: Additional Curses
The full curse system addon for Curses Revamped.
This addon turns curses into a real gamble. Curses can hide behind fake vanilla enchantment names, unknown curses must be researched, cursed books can be dangerous just to hold, and enchanting can offer stronger gear at a cost.
Required Dependency
This mod requires Curses Revamped Base 1.2.3 or newer for this release.
Base page: Curses Revamped
Install both files for your loader:
- Fabric: Curses Revamped Base + Curses Revamped Additional
- NeoForge: Curses Revamped Base + Curses Revamped Additional
Do not install only this Additional jar. In 1.2+, Additional is a true addon and depends on Base for shared curse logic, discovery data, cursed boons, commands, and vanilla curse support.
Client And Server
Additional should be installed on both the server and the client.
The server needs it for custom curse behavior. The client needs it for research UI, fake/hidden curse tooltips, scrambled curse names, and expanded tooltip details.
What This Adds
- Hidden curses that start unknown per player and per world
- Fake enchantment disguises, including anvil fake-name trolling
- Enchanting-table curse research with XP, lapis, and bookshelf costs
- Ominous Offering: stronger enchanting-table rolls with guaranteed curse risk
- Cursed boons that can make some cursed items tempting
- Cursed books in loot
- Held cursed-book effects
- Bad Omen and Hero of the Village curse chance changes
- Automatic equipping for visible cursed enchanting results
- Custom curse tooltips, debug support, and admin discovery commands
How Curse Discovery Works
Unknown Curses
Curses start unknown for each player in each world. Unknown curses can appear as scrambled Minecraft obfuscated text, or sometimes pretend to be believable vanilla enchantments.
Examples:
- Curse of Fire can appear as Fire Protection
- Curse of Projectiles can appear as Projectile Protection
- Curse of Explosions can appear as Blast Protection
- Curse of Vulnerability can appear as Protection
- Curse of Counterfeit can appear as Protection
- Curse of Fragility can appear as Unbreaking
- Curse of Pulling can appear as Knockback on melee weapons or Punch on bows and crossbows
- Curse of Backlash can appear as Thorns on armor, Sharpness on melee weapons, or Power on bows and crossbows
- Curse of Concrete Legs can appear as Feather Falling
- Curse of Dead Wings can appear as Unbreaking or Mending
Research
To fully reveal a curse:
- Put a cursed book or cursed item in slot 0 of an enchanting table.
- Put lapis in slot 1.
- Press the Research button.
Base research costs:
- Cursed book: 5 XP levels + 2 lapis
- Cursed item, tool, or armor: 12 XP levels + 4 lapis
Bookshelves matter. Missing bookshelves make research more expensive.
Protection-style fake curses can also enter a middle state: taking matching damage can reveal the real curse name, but the detailed effect stays locked until research.
Ominous Offering And Cursed Enchanting
Ominous Offering
Ominous Offering is a rare enchanting-table option that gives stronger enchantment rolls at the cost of guaranteed curse risk.
Bad Omen makes Ominous Offering and extra curses more likely. Hero of the Village reduces curse pressure.
Ominous Offering can also very rarely roll one vanilla enchantment above its normal max level, controlled by hidden config.
Cursed Boons
Some newly cursed items can receive a small positive boon:
- Weapons can gain attack damage
- Tools can gain mining speed
- Armor can gain armor or toughness
- Bows and crossbows can gain projectile damage
The goal is simple: make players ask, "Is this item worth the curse?"
Cursed Equipping
If an enchanted item receives a visible curse, it can automatically equip into its matching slot so the player cannot dodge the curse by leaving it in the enchanting table.
Hidden fake curses avoid auto-equipping so they do not immediately reveal themselves.
Fake enchantments are item-aware. Weapon curses can disguise themselves as believable weapon enchants such as Sharpness, Knockback, Looting, or Power; armor curses use Protection, Thorns, or a matching protection enchantment. Curses without a convincing match stay scrambled instead of displaying an invalid disguise. The same rules apply to normal tooltips, anvil displays, and debug reports.
Additional Curse List
Curse of Fragility
Leveled curse. Items can take extra random durability damage when damaged. Can fake as Unbreaking.
Curse of Hunger
Durability loss can consume hunger instead. With Fragility, the hunger cost can become much harsher.
Curse of Echoes
Durability damage can repeat back into the item.
Curse of Soulbinding
Soulbound items stay in your inventory after death and cannot be thrown out or dropped.
Curse of Backlash
When you damage something, there is a chance you take damage yourself.
- Level 1: 8% chance
- Level 2: 17% chance
- Level 3: 25% chance
Can fake as Thorns on armor, Sharpness on melee weapons, or Power on bows and crossbows.
Curse of Blindness
Applies to helmets and anything worn on the head. Can blind the wearer.
Curse of Pulling
When you hit a target, you are pulled toward them. On melee weapons it can fake as Knockback; on bows and crossbows it can fake as Punch. Knockback and Punch make the pull stronger.
Curse of Concrete Legs
Applies to boots and leggings. Reverse Feather Falling: fall damage starts sooner and scales harder.
Curse of No Jumping
Applies to boots and leggings. Blocks normal jumping and swimming upward.
Curse of Curses
Acts like getting hit with all supported curse effects at once. Rare because it is intentionally awful.
If worn on armor, it can also project held-item debuffs onto the item in your hand.
Curse of Bad Omen
Applies Bad Omen. The longer you survive with it, the higher the level can become.
Curse of Reduced Reach
Four-level curse that reduces reach. Armor gives a passive reach penalty; held items give an active penalty.
Curse of Fire
Armor curse with 4 levels. Can fake as Fire Protection, but fire damage is increased and taking damage can ignite you.
Curse of Projectiles
Armor curse with 4 levels. Can fake as Projectile Protection, but projectile damage is increased.
Curse of Explosions
Armor curse with 4 levels. Can fake as Blast Protection, but explosion damage is increased and explosions can jolt you upward.
Curse of Vulnerability
Armor curse with 4 levels. Can fake as Protection, but all incoming damage is increased.
Curse of Counterfeit
Armor curse. Can fake as Protection, but the cursed armor piece gives no armor or toughness damage reduction. Other enchantment effects still work. Idea: Melmi.
Curse of Crossed Wires
Reverses controls, including movement, jumping/sneaking, and mouse buttons.
Curse of Dead Wings
Applies to elytra. Elytra flight can randomly fail for a short unpredictable time. Can fake as Unbreaking or Mending.
Curse of Mercy
Can prevent killing blows by leaving the target alive at 1 health.
Curse of Magnetism
Pulls nearby dropped items and incoming arrows toward the cursed player.
Curse of Uncontrolled Aim
While active, the player's aim can smoothly drift and stay offset instead of immediately returning to center. Normal movement, bow and crossbow aiming, and Elytra flight each have different levels of interference. Elytra flight is affected the most.
Curse of Psychosis
While worn on the head, Psychosis can make the player send random configured messages in chat after an unpredictable delay. Idea: Melmi.
Curse of Wayward Projectiles
Applies to held items and has four levels. Ranged projectiles can veer in random directions, with higher levels causing stronger deviation.
Suggestions And Future Ideas
Suggestions Welcome
Suggestions are welcome for curses, enchanting-table ideas, fake enchantments, cursed books, and ways to make risky gear worth using.
I am happy to consider any idea, even if it is strange, unfair, or experimental. Most suggestions that fit the mod's focus will be added eventually, tested, or refined into a version that works well in Minecraft.
The main direction is still simple: deepen Minecraft's existing enchanting and curse systems without turning the mod into a separate magic overhaul.
Debugging And Config
Debug Command
/cursesrevamped debug item
Shows the held item's real enchantments, curse discovery state, fake display state, boon data, and active curse effects.
Hidden Config
Config files are plain hidden config files, not Mod Menu screens.
- Base config:
cursesrevamped.properties - Additional config:
cursesrevamped-additional.properties
Base owns shared settings such as cursed boon chances. Additional owns addon-specific settings such as fake anvil curses and Ominous Offering behavior.
