Hollow Snow

Winter here is not weather. It is the thing every decision you make has to answer to.

Cold accumulates whenever you are standing somewhere that isn't warm. You cannot hide from it under a roof and you cannot fight it with a sword. You can only outlast it — and outlasting it means settling somewhere, and settling somewhere means building.

Warmth has to be built

Fire warms. Nothing else does. A torch, a campfire, a lantern, a lit furnace. Glowstone lights a room and does not heat it by a single degree — a lit room and a warm room are not the same thing here, and learning that is the first thing the winter teaches.

Everything else grows out of that:

an ember furnace that burns charcoal and embercore heat pipes, blowers and batteries to carry warmth where the furnace cannot reach nether-brick lining that makes the same load of fuel last well over twice as long a furnace that has stood in one place long enough settles into it and starts burning leaner — the one thing in this mod you cannot craft, buy or carry, only wait for

Torches gutter out. Lanterns crack through. Nothing burns forever except what you built yourself.

Settling down, for real

Ordinary crops freeze. Out in the open a plant never gets past its first stage and gives back exactly the seed you put in. Growing food means a greenhouse: glass overhead, daylight through the glass, and fire in the room.

Livestock freezes too. A cow left in the cold doesn't die — it seizes up and stands there, and an animal you never kept warm has nothing left to give when you finally kill it. A heated barn stops being decoration.

Winter berries are the one thing that fruits in the open cold. They are what you live on for the first few days while you work out everything else.

Two people manage better than one

You keep each other warm. You can only hear each other close up. You leave each other cairns that carry two hundred blocks, and markers that go on standing after whoever left them is gone.

And something else

There is one thing out in the fog.

It does not ambush you. It does not chase you. It does not show up early. It leaves signs, it looks in through windows, and it changes as you settle in and stop being afraid of it.
