LocalCape
LocalCape is a minimal, client-only Fabric mod for Minecraft 26.2. It loads PNG capes from the current Minecraft instance and lets you select one in-game. The cape is applied locally in single-player; other players cannot see it.
Features
- Discovers PNG files in the
capesdirectory. - Adds a Local Cape selector to Options > Skin Customization.
- Remembers the selected filename between launches.
- Applies the cape only to the local player in single-player.
- Falls back to the vanilla cape when the file is missing or invalid.
- Reloads the cape with Minecraft's
F3+Tresource reload. - Requires Fabric Loader only; Fabric API is not required.
Requirements
- Minecraft 26.2
- Fabric Loader 0.19.3 or newer
- Java 25
Installation and usage
- Install Fabric Loader for Minecraft 26.2.
- Put the LocalCape JAR in the instance's
modsdirectory. - Create a
capesdirectory inside the Minecraft instance directory. - Add one or more PNG capes to that directory.
- Open Options > Skin Customization and use Local Cape to choose a file.
For Prism Launcher, the cape path is normally:
<Prism instance>/.minecraft/capes/
The selector scans the directory whenever Skin Customization opens. Reopen that
screen after adding or removing files. If you replace the selected PNG while the
game is running, press F3+T to reload it.
The selected filename is stored in config/localcape.txt. If no selection has
been saved, LocalCape defaults to cape.png.
Current limitations
- PNG is the only listed image format; WebP is unsupported and JPEG lacks cape transparency.
- The selector displays filenames without previews.
- There is no in-menu option to disable the local cape.
- Capes are never distributed to or displayed by other players.
Credits
LocalCape is a heavily stripped fork of FabricTailor by samo_lego and its contributors. The original project provided the foundation from which the local-only cape implementation was derived.
