# What is Koil? **Local AI, automation, development tools, diagnostics, content management, and more, built directly into Minecraft.** Koil is an experimental technical Minecraft mod for developers, creators, power users, and anyone who likes pushing Minecraft far beyond what it was originally built to do. Run local AI models. Automate the player. Edit files without leaving the game. Inspect your instance. Manage Minecraft content. Debug performance. Render LaTeX and media in chat. Build your own automation with KTL. **Koil brings systems that normally live around Minecraft into Minecraft itself.** --- # What can you do with Koil? ## Run Local AI Models In-Game Koil can run supported **GGUF language models locally on your computer**. Models can be downloaded and managed through Minecraft, with Koil handling the local runtime, model configuration, streaming, hardware guidance, and other setup. Use `/ask` to talk directly to your selected local model. Koil currently includes systems for: - Local GGUF models - `llama.cpp` - Model downloading and installation - Streaming responses - Multiple local model providers - Model and hardware recommendations - Conversation context - Deep Thought - Tool calling - Optional voice output - Automation Mode Normal `/ask` conversations do not give the model control of Minecraft. For that, there is **Automation Mode**. --- # Give Your Model Control of Minecraft **Automation Mode** allows compatible local models to use Koil's registered tools instead of only producing text. Koil can expose capabilities for things like: - Moving - Looking around - Jumping - Sprinting - Navigation - Mining blocks - Using items - Interacting with blocks - Interacting with entities - Attacking - Inspecting inventory - Using containers - Sending chat - Running Minecraft commands - Observing blocks and entities - Reading task state - Waiting and retrying The model does not simply send one input and assume the job is finished. Koil's automation architecture is being built around a larger loop: > **inspect → plan → act → observe → verify → recover → continue** This allows automation to work toward increasingly complicated objectives instead of being limited to individual macros. Automation is still one of Koil's most experimental systems, so expect it to evolve quickly. --- # KTL Koil has its own task and automation language called **KTL**. KTL allows automation behavior to be described outside of the Java engine so tasks can be expanded, modified, and reused without permanently hardcoding every possible objective into the mod. Koil's automation layer includes systems for: - KTL compilation - Capabilities - Task planning - Task execution - Conditions - Objectives - Task state - Validation - Approvals - Failure handling - Feedback - Recovery - Macros The goal is to make Minecraft automation something you can **build on**, not just a fixed list of commands. --- # Deep Thought Sometimes one model response is not enough. `/ask deep` gives Koil's model a longer investigation process with bounded read-only tools. Deep Thought can gather information, investigate a problem over multiple phases, maintain evidence and conclusions, save progress, and resume an investigation later. It is designed for questions where the model should actually investigate something instead of immediately guessing an answer. --- # A Development Workspace Inside Minecraft Koil includes a growing collection of tools for working on Minecraft without constantly switching between the game, your file manager, configuration folders, logs, and external utilities. ## File Explorer Browse supported files directly from Minecraft. ## File Editor Open and modify text and configuration files in-game. ## Development Workspaces Koil can detect supported development workspaces and allow its development and model systems to inspect bounded project files. ## Project Validation Supported development tools can run registered Gradle validation operations. ## Logs View Koil, Minecraft, and package logs without digging through the instance manually. ## Configuration Find and modify supported configuration from inside the game. Koil is especially useful if you make: - Mods - Datapacks - Resource packs - Shaders - Minecraft tools - Automation - Other technical Minecraft projects --- # Manage Your Minecraft Content Koil contains tools for managing more of your Minecraft instance without leaving the game. The idea is simple: > **If it is part of your Minecraft instance, you should be able to interact with more of it from Minecraft.** --- # Dynamic Minecraft Content Koil contains a world-aware content and registry system designed to understand more of the content that actually exists in the current game. This includes work around: - Vanilla content - Modded content - Datapack content - World-specific content - Blocks and items - Properties and metadata - Registry information This becomes especially useful for Koil's development, automation, and model systems because those systems need to know what exists in the Minecraft instance they are actually running inside. --- # KPak Koil also includes its own experimental package format called **KPak**. KPak is designed for packaging and installing structured Minecraft and Koil content. The current system includes: - Package manifests - Package building - Installation - SHA-256 verification - Ed25519 signatures - Author identities - Compatibility checks - Transaction state - Backups - Rollback - Installed-file verification KPak is still experimental and its trust and package systems continue to be developed. --- # Better Technical Information Koil heavily expands Minecraft's diagnostic systems. Its redesigned F3 and performance interfaces are built to make technical information easier to understand instead of simply putting more text on the screen. Koil can inspect information related to: - FPS - Frame timing - Memory - Garbage collection - Rendering - Entities - Chunks - Shaders - Resource packs - Mods - Java - Hardware - Server conditions - Minecraft settings - Runtime state Graphs, historical measurements, recommendations, system information, and other visualizations are used where useful. **Koil is not primarily an optimization mod.** Performance is one part of a much larger system. The goal is to help you understand **what Minecraft is doing and why**. --- # Rich Chat Koil turns Minecraft chat into something considerably more capable. Its rich-chat systems include support for things such as: - Multiline messages - Formatted text - Links - LaTeX - Tables - Images - GIFs - Audio - Video - Files - Attachments - Media previews - Clipboard content - Private-message tools - Local model interfaces - Automation interfaces Yes. **Minecraft chat can render LaTeX.** Because apparently that was necessary. Some synchronized rich-chat features require Koil to also be installed on the server. --- # Minecraft Should Still Look Like Minecraft Koil changes and extends a lot of Minecraft's interface, but it is deliberately designed around Minecraft's existing visual language. The goal is not to make Minecraft look like Windows, an IDE, or a generic desktop application. Koil's screens use compact Minecraft-style layouts, familiar controls, pixel-based presentation, and the game's existing visual identity. On first launch, you can also choose whether supported screens use Koil's redesigned interface or retain a more vanilla presentation. The rest of Koil does not disappear if you keep the vanilla UI. --- # Client + Server A lot of Koil can work locally on the client. Installing Koil on a server enables additional synchronized systems and APIs. Server-side integrations currently include infrastructure for things such as: - Rich-chat synchronization - Presence - Activity snapshots - HUD information - Market data - Server-provided state - Koil networking APIs Not every Koil feature requires Koil on the server. Automation also does not bypass Minecraft permissions or server rules. If a server does not allow automation, don't use it there. --- # Built to Be Extended Koil is more than the screens you can see.
