Ever since the Soul Lantern was added to the game, I've wanted to make a lantern wisp. The idea has grown since then, but at its core is that little wisp that makes your world feel just a bit more magical.
This datapack adds lantern-wisp-themed mobs to soul sand valleys and mineshafts. Each mob has core mechanics based around its lantern that both help and challenge the player.
Poes: All poes have or are a lantern. When the mob dies the lantern falls to the ground and shatters like a splash potion inflicting an effect. For soul lanterns it's speed and for normal lanterns it's healing. If the lantern has the glowing effect then the effect it inflicts is upgraded. Glowing lanterns will spread the glowing effect to other nearby lanterns. Lanterns of different types will not spread glowing to each other. If you ring a bell that hangs from a soul lantern then nearby lantern wisps get the glowing effect. To get a floating lantern that can support a bell you must kill a wisp with an item that has silk touch. Skeletal Poes have buffs corresponding to the effect their lantern gives.
Soul Poes (aka soul lantern wisps) spawn in Soul Sand Valleys. They are friendly most of the time but stay too close for too long, and eventually, they will either try to strike you with the wither effect or a harmless pretend attack. They drop coal when killed and generate soul particles when skimming the surface of soul sand.
Skeletal Soul Poes are skeletons or wither skeletons with a soul lantern embedded in their ribcage. This provides the skeleton with extra speed. Additionally, if the skeleton gets the glowing effect then it will get absorbed by the lantern, which helps with identifying them. If a fortress extends into a soul sand valley, the wither skeletons can spawn as skeletal poes.
Mineshaft Poes are normal lantern wisps found in mineshafts. They are a passive mob that often hangs from the ceiling like a lantern. If you have Optifine then the mob is a dynamic light source. If you kill it then the lantern will fall to the ground and shatter providing a small amount of healing. (Extra danger will be added to balance this out)
Skeletal Mineshaft Poes behave like other skeletal poes except healing-themed. They have the regeneration effect and their lantern grants it when it shatters. Spawns in mineshafts
