TridentKiller - Minecraft Java Edition Datapack
TridentKiller is a datapack designed for Minecraft Java Edition 1.21 that replicates the unique behavior of tridents in Bedrock Edition, allowing their use in automated systems like XP farms. This datapack includes advanced checks to ensure tridents deal damage and generate experience only under specific conditions, bridging the gap between the two game versions.
Features
- Tridents deal damage to nearby mobs when:
- Fixed on moving blocks (e.g., trapdoors triggered by redstone).
- Enchanted with Channeling and submerged in water.
- Automatic experience generation at the location of mob deaths.
- Detection of trident motion and rotation to prevent misuse.
- Fully compatible with trident-based automatic farms.

How to Use
Follow these steps to set up your TridentKiller:
- Enchant your trident:
- Make sure the trident has the Channeling enchantment.
- Prepare the trapdoor setup:
- Throw the trident at a trapdoor connected to a looping redstone activation system using a powered comparator.
- Align the trident:
- Wait until the trident becomes fully vertical and aligned. Once aligned, deactivate the redstone system.
- Add water below:
- Place water directly below the trapdoor, where the trident will fall. This is the spot where mobs from your farm should gather.
- Break the trapdoor:
- Destroy the trapdoor, allowing the trident to drop into the water.
Your TridentKiller is now fully functional and ready to automate mob killing and XP collection!
FAQ
1. Will my farm stop working if the trident despawns due to Minecraft's mechanics?
No need to worry! The trident used in this setup is marked with a special tag by the datapack, preventing it from despawning. Unless your world lasts over 68 real-world years, your trident will remain in the game.
2. Do all tridents stay permanently in the game?
Not at all. The datapack specifically tags only the tridents that meet certain conditions:
- The trident must have the Channeling enchantment.
- It needs to be thrown into a unique setup involving a trapdoor activated by a redstone loop system.
This ensures that only tridents in this unique state receive the tag. Without this system, the trident would behave normally and eventually despawn under typical Minecraft rules.
3. Can this cause damage to mobs in water under normal circumstances?
No. The system is designed to prevent tagged tridents from causing damage unless they meet all the requirements:
- The trident must be in motion.
- It must have the Channeling enchantment.
- It must be in contact with water.
Without these conditions, the trident will remain inactive.
4. Why is the redstone system necessary?
The redstone system ensures the trident enters a specific alignment and motion state that is nearly impossible to achieve manually. This state allows the trident to receive the special tag required for the TridentKiller to work, but it also ensures that unintended tridents don’t interfere with gameplay.
5. What happens if I break the farm accidentally?
If the setup is broken, you can repeat the steps outlined in the "How to Use" section to reset it. The tagged trident will remain available for reuse.
6. Can I use multiple TridentKillers in one world?
Absolutely! The datapack is designed to support multiple TridentKillers simultaneously, as long as each is set up correctly with its own tagged trident.
7. Is there a visual guide for setting up the TridentKiller?
Yes! Check out the Gallery section below for a step-by-step guide with images to help you set up your TridentKiller quickly and effectively. Visual instructions make the process even easier to follow!
