Ardwick
Ardwick is a survival overhaul for players who miss Minecraft's Golden Age but still wish to experience the modern game. It features slower horizontal progression to prevent the typical two-week phase burnout. A heavy focus has been placed on balancing mechanics and adding to the world's realism without making the game punishing.
The new progression is taught via 60+ new advancements so that you never get stuck.
Atmosphere, Seasons, Weather, and Climate
- Seasons change the world's ambience and day length.
- Days are longer (20-40 minutes, depending on season).
- Solar eclipses occur every 25 days. The orbits of the Sun and Moon have been decoupled.
- Cold biomes, nights, and winters gradually reduce your body temperature. Stay indoors, underground, or warm up by a fire to restore your vigour.
- Weather is tied to seasons.
- Latitudes push colder biomes north and warmer biomes south.
Slower
- Vigour system balances sprinting and strip mining. Earning XP and mining ore gives you temporary scaling boosts to movement speed, mining speed, and attack damage.
- Cooking food requires tending your campfire.
- Smelting raw copper, raw iron, and iron ingots takes longer so that progress requires time management.
- Beds speed up time rather than skipping it.
- Injury, armour, shields, the cold, and filled Shulker Boxes (Sacks) slow you down.
Progression
- Gold < Wood < Copper < Iron < Bronze < Rose Gold < Steel < Netherite.
- Copper can be smelted in the Mud Kiln (throw Dirt in water to create Mud).
- Iron is exclusively processed via Bloomeries.
- Steel is produced by blasting Iron.
- Alloys of Copper and Tin create Bronze. Alloys of Copper and Gold create Rose Gold.
- Gold and Rose Gold tiers provide Silk Touch, Soul Speed, Fire Protection, and Looting.
- Diamond, Emerald, and Lapis Ore removed. Gold only spawns in the Nether. Flint deposits spawn near the surface. Tin ore spawns near Copper in small quantities.
- Structures removed (except Ancient Cities, Mineshafts, Nether Fossils, Dungeons, and Desert Wells).
Death
- Dying reduces your maximum health by one heart.
- Restore a lost heart by eating a Golden Apple.
- keepInventory is on.
- Minimum maximum health is set by advancements, so you can't run out of health too early in the game.
Food, Cooking, and Farming
- Hunger is removed. Eating food provides direct health regeneration.
- Cookies provide speed. Glow Berries and Carrots provide night vision.
- Wheat dropped in water (including Cauldrons) creates Dough. Dough cooked on a campfire bakes bread.
- Dough crafted with Sugar and Cocoa Beans creates Cookie Dough, baked creates Cookies.
- Dough crafted with either Raw Mutton or Beef and Potato creates a Raw Pasty.
- Pasties provide Haste and increased yield from Tin mining.
- Crops can be found growing wild.
- Carrots and Potatoes now have seeds.
- Carrots can be cooked into Cooked Carrots, gaining +1HP but losing night vision.
- Flax plants provide a renewable source of String.
- Small patches of mushrooms can be found in caves. Mushrooms are now edible raw.
- Animals take longer to mature, and longer between breeding. Animal maturation is linked to the calendar so they mature even when they're in unloaded chunks.
- Chickens shed their feathers.
- All Chickens lay regular eggs. When hatched from an egg, the Chicken's variant matches the biome you're in.
Brewing
- Effects from drinking potions stack so that durations can be extended.
- Both Glowstone and Redstone can be added to the same potion to improve its potency and duration.
- Potion of Swiftness + Blaze Powder brews Potions of Haste.
- Awkward Potion + Amethyst Shard brews Bottles o' Vigour.
- Awkward Potion + Glow Berries brews Potions of Night Vision.
- Awkward Potion + Feather brews Potions of Feather Falling.
- Water Bottle + Chorus Fruit brews Dragon's Breath.
Other New Mechanics & Quality of Life Features
- Lit campfires provide regeneration and set your spawn.
- No weapon cooldown, similar to pre-1.8 combat.
- Items spill out on the ground rather than clumping, similar to pre-1.3.1.
- Music Discs drop as 'Blank Music Disc' which can be crafted into a Music Disc of your choice. Similarly Pottery Sherds and Banner Patterns are craftable.
- Dropping an Amethyst Shard into a Soul Campfire spawns an Allay.
- Creating Obsidian risks spawning Blazes that seek to defend their home.
- Combining an Ender Pearl and Wither Star creates a Pearl of Returning. Using a Pearl of Returning instantly teleports you to your spawn and refunds your Wither Star.
- Cooking Rotten Flesh turns it into Leather.
- Cats spawn in more biomes. Variants are biome dependent.
- Hostile mobs have been balanced by biome.
- Dropping Amethyst Shards into water creates Prismarine Shards. Prismarine Shards craft 1:1 into Prismarine Crystals.
- Dropping Amethyst Shards onto Sculk creates Echo Shards.
- Dropping Dirt into water creates Mud.
- Dropping Concrete Powder into water creates Concrete.
- Using Shears on an Item Frame turns it invisible.
- Tree felling with axes.
- Harvesting crops on farmland with a hoe will auto-replant them.
- Villager trading has been balanced. Some unobtainable items are made obtainable via trading.
- Piglin Bartering has been balanced.
- Nether Portals can be created with sizes as small as 1x1.
- Glow Ink Sacs have been removed and had their functionality transferred to Glowstone Dust.
- Rockets have been made more expensive to prevent the Elytra making all other forms of transport redundant.
Enchanting
- Enchanting removed
- Anvil functionality removed
No End
Installation
Ardwick is a Data Pack + Resource Pack in one file, however for easy installation it is also available as a mod for Fabric, Forge, Neoforge, and Quilt. To install Ardwick as a Data Pack rather than a mod, put a copy of the zip in both your resource pack folder and your world's data pack folder.
Celestial Order Fix is available as an optional Vanilla companion shader to improve the visuals of eclipses added by the data pack.
It is recommended to play Ardwick on a new world.
Licensing
CC0-1.0. Do as you please. Mods/Datapacks/Shaders that are stuck on old versions because they're no longer supported by the Dev but the Dev has placed them under a restrictive licence is a plague. You'll never have that issue here.
Known issues
- Chickens won't shed feathers directly onto a hopper. Leaving this in to prevent automation.
- The Sun and stars appear in front the moon (unless you're using the Celestial Order Fix shader pack). This can't be fixed with a datapack alone.
- Some item conversions don't occur correctly when taken from the creative inventory. This is a low priority to fix as the datapack is designed for survival.
- Herobrine appears rarely in dimly lit areas or after building his shrine. I'm still working on a fix for this.
