2.0.0 — The Big Combat Overhaul
It's been a while since 1.0.0. And yeah, I probably should've called this something other than a "minor update".
This update basically rebuilds the combat system around combos and weapon abilities, so there's quite a lot to talk about.
⚠️ Breaking: the mod ID changed from advanced_combat to advancedcombat. Old configs and settings won't carry over. Remove the 1.0.0 jar before installing 2.0.0.
New Stuff
-
10 Weapon Abilities. Two abilities for every weapon type:
- Sword: Shadow Dash, Blade Wave
- Axe: Whirlwind, Battle Roar
- Trident: Tidal Wave, Storm Call
- Mace: Uppercut, Meteor Slam
- Bow: Arrow Rain, Piercing Shot
They're activated with rebindable keys, R and G by default.
-
Combo-Costing Abilities. Abilities now consume combo and have their own minimum combo requirement, cooldown and damage.
-
Combo Scaling. Ability damage scales with your current combo, up to x1.5 by default. The bigger the combo, the harder you hit.
-
Combo XP. Finished combos now give XP, with an extra bonus for every rank you reached. At least you get something for losing your 87-hit combo.
-
Berserk Upgrades. Berserk now gives bonus damage, damage resistance, extra speed and a flame aura.
-
3 Advancements.
- Warming Up — x10 combo
- Rip and Tear — Berserk
- Unstoppable — x100 combo
-
Camera Shake. Rank-ups, abilities and Berserk can now shake the camera. The intensity is configurable, because not everyone wants their screen to have a seizure every five seconds.
-
Better HUD. You can now change its scale and X/Y position, as well as show ability keys, cooldowns and combo requirements.
-
In-Game Config Screen. Advanced Combat now has new config screen under
Mods -> Advanced Combat. There are also separate server and client.tomlconfigs, and every ability can be configured individually.
Changed Stuff
-
Ability activation was moved from Shift + Right Click to dedicated keybinds. Much less awkward.
-
Taking damage now removes 25% of your combo by default. This can be changed or disabled entirely with the config.
-
By default, only hostile mobs, mobs targeting you, and players can build your combo. No more punching random animals just to keep the number going.
-
Abilities have been rebalanced. Some notable defaults:
- Shadow Dash — 4s cooldown
- Whirlwind — 8s cooldown
- Uppercut — 5s cooldown
- Tidal Wave — 6 damage
-
The config system was moved from AutoConfig (Cloth Config) to NeoForge's native config system.
-
Sword reach, bow draw speed and trident throw speed passives no longer use mixins. They should play nicer with other mods now. Default values haven't changed.
-
Audio files were re-compressed, reducing the jar size from 4.0 MB to 2.3 MB. Berserk music is also replace with custom track by me.
-
LAME was renamed to Combo, and AMAZING was renamed to AWESOME. Because "LAME" wasn't exactly the kind of rank I wanted to give the player.
Removed Stuff
-
Cloth Config. It's not needed anymore.
-
The empty creative tab. It was doing absolutely nothing, so it has been sent to the void.
Technical & Boring (But Important) Stuff
-
Config System: Advanced Combat now uses NeoForge's native config system. Server and client settings are stored separately in
.tomlfiles. -
Mod ID:
advanced_combat→advancedcombat. This is why your old configs won't carry over. -
Mixins: Sword reach, bow draw speed and trident speed passives were rewritten without mixins. Hopefully this means fewer compatibility headaches.
-
Audio: Music and sound effects were re-compressed to reduce the mod's file size.
Projects on Modrinth are automatically available through a Maven repository for use with JVM build tools such as Gradle. To learn more about the Modrinth Maven API, click here.
Note: When available, you should use the creator's maven repo instead as it will have transitive dependency information that the Modrinth Maven API does not. You may also end up with duplicate dependencies if you use a mix of Modrinth and non-Modrinth Maven repositories for your dependencies, because the group identifier will be different when served through the Modrinth Maven API.
