Forked aims to overhaul the trident to be far more reliable, consistent, and intuitive

Tridents have been remodeled and retextured (via a built-in resource pack)
Loyalty allows Tridents to return prematurely by punching with an empty hand
Tridents return even without the Loyalty enchantment
Tridents remember the slot they were thrown from (including the off-hand!)
Trident melee attacks work like the spear
Using a Trident no longer slows player movement
Attacking entities with a Trident melee will restore your breath
Drowned will drop their tridents far more frequently
Tridents have increased durability
Channeling works in both Thunder and Rain
Players will be considered 'Wet' for 3 seconds after being touched by Rain, Water, Potions, etc.
Impaling deals increased damage to any entities classified as Wet
Tridents thrown into the void will return instead of being lost
Tridents can be repaired with prismarine shards
