About Mistake404: The Watcher
Mistake404 is a horror / ARG mod for Minecraft. It puts Chronos, a god of time, into your world, and then breaks the fourth wall — it reaches outside Minecraft to unsettle you in ways a normal mod won't. Your goal is to destroy Chronos and find out what actually happened to the members of the Spirit SMP, the fictional server whose story this mod continues.
Read this before installing
This mod runs code on your computer outside of Minecraft. That is the whole point of it, and I'd rather over-explain it than have anyone feel tricked.
It is not a virus. It does not read your personal files, it does not send anything over the network, it does not delete anything, and nothing keeps running once you close the game. But it does genuinely touch your system, and here is the complete list.
The first time you enter a world, an opt-in screen appears listing these effects. You have to accept it before any of them can happen. If you don't want them, quit and uninstall — nothing has run at that point.
How it works
All of the system-level effects are done by writing small PowerShell scripts into your world's save folder and running them. These features are Windows-only. On Linux and macOS they silently do nothing, and the rest of the mod plays normally.
Files it creates
tartarosz.txton your Desktop- Fake "camera" files on your Desktop — an empty
.jpgplus two.txtlogs, made to look like something recorded you - Screenshots on your Desktop, named
surveillance_001.pngand up, taken from inside the game - A
.bmpin your temp folder, used as the wallpaper image .ps1scripts and a few small.txtstate files inside the world save folder
Programs it opens
- The built-in Windows Camera app, so you see your own webcam preview. The mod does not record anything and does not transmit anything — it just opens the app that's already on your PC.
- Notepad, and it types into it using simulated keystrokes
- Your default browser, once, to a single YouTube link
Changes it makes to Windows
- Sets your desktop wallpaper. This is the only change that survives closing the game. Right-click your desktop and set it back.
- Moves and resizes the Minecraft window
- Shows a Windows tray notification
- Changes the Minecraft window title
What it reads
- Your Windows account name, which it shows back to you in the window title and in the notification. That's it. It isn't stored or sent anywhere.
Turning it off
The mod's config menu has a Multiplayer toggle. Switching it on disables every system-level effect listed above while leaving all the in-game horror intact — so it doubles as a safe mode. System-level effects are also permanently disabled on dedicated servers and for anyone who isn't the host, regardless of settings.
What's in the mod
- 50+ scripted events. Some are quiet and psychological, some are loud. They fire unpredictably as you play, so you never know what's coming.
- A multi-phase boss fight against Chronarcha, a gigantic amethyst spider, with its own arena, custom health bar, and original music.
- A ritual encounter with Chronos, with custom entities, original sound design, and a cinematic wormhole sequence timed to music.
- Custom entities that watch you, follow you, and talk to you.
- Escalating glitch effects, cryptic messages, and on-screen corruption that build over a full playthrough.
- Fourth-wall-breaking effects that leave the game window. See the section above for exactly what that means.
How it plays
Install it and it runs quietly in the background of your world, triggering events on its own. There's no crafting or setup. It's built for one immersive playthrough — pick a world you actually care about, play alone, put headphones on, and let it happen over time.
Status
First public release, still actively in development. Expect more events, more story, and more of Chronos.
Part of the Spirit SMP universe.
