Inspired by Exalm's Old Days mod, Nostalgic Tweaks brings back a plethora of Minecraft Alpha, Beta, and Post Release lost or changed gameplay elements. This mod is intended for nostalgic enthusiasts who want to relive the glory days of Minecraft Java edition by tweaking the mod to their nostalgic preference.

Some major nostalgic tweaks included in this mod are old classic/alpha/beta light rendering, old classic/alpha/beta fog rendering, old classic/alpha/beta sky and void colors, 2D floating items with disabled diffused lighting, old mob spawning, old combat mechanics & aesthetics (e.g., disabled particles, sounds, and mob animations), and so much more! There are currently over 300+ nostalgic tweaks available in the latest beta version of 2.0.0 with more on the way!

For the best nostalgic experience, I recommend using the Golden Days resource pack by PoeticRainbow. It comes with an abundance of nostalgic packs, such as an alpha and picture perfect pack which coincides wonderfully with Nostalgic Tweaks. Additionally, use the Modern Beta mod by b3spectacled for nostalgic terrain generation.

Nostalgic Tweaks in version 2.0.0 comes with five major categories; Sound, Eye Candy, Gameplay, Animation, and Swing. Some of these categories will have their own subcategories that clump together related tweaks. Read the configuration section below to learn how to change tweaks in this mod. This mod does not add any textures, so it is recommend to have the Golden Days resource pack by PoeticRainbow installed. The order of your resource packs matters. Make sure Programmer Art is first, followed by the order of resource packs listed in the instructions from the Golden Days resource pack.

The mod currently has over 300+ nostalgic tweaks that can all be used in singleplayer and multiplayer. There are tooltip bubbles in the mod's configuration menu that are next to each tweak's name. Hover over these bubbles to read a more detailed description of what each tweak changes. Tweaks that are controlled by the server are tagged as such in the mod's config menu. You can safely add and remove this mod from worlds at any time. This mod does not make any changes to the world.

Each version will have bugfixes as issues are made at the mod's GitHub or made at the mod's Discord. Each version may also have new tweaks depending on the suggestions made by users. If you would like to contribute ideas to this mod, then please stop by at our community's Discord server to share your ideas for the mod!

To see the changes made for all versions, please see the changelog file at the mod's GitHub. This mod is made universally for Forge and Fabric using Architectury.

To open the mod's configuration menu, press O for "Old" while in-game or at the main title screen. This hotkey can be changed in the vanilla controls menu or in the mod's configuration menu. You can change the page that opens when pressing this hotkey by clicking the Settings button on the mod's settings homepage. The first category that appears when this button is clicked is the General category. Under the Menu Settings subcategory, you can pick which menu that opens by default. If you have Mod Menu installed for Fabric, then you can also access the configuration screen through the Mods button.

Each tweak will have tags next their name in the configuration menu. Each tag identifies different aspects of each tweak. The most important tags are the Client, Server, and Reload/Restart tags. You can hover your mouse over each tag to see more information as a tooltip. You can also disable some tweak tags from appearing in the General category under the Menu Settings subcategory.

The configuration menu comes with a special Search system. Text that is typed into the input bar will bring up fuzzy results by default. This means the mod will attempt to show results that it believes you were trying to search for. Some results will appear due to category names or related term searches. You can narrow search results by using Search Tags. To see all the search tags that are available, access the General category and open the Search Tags subcategory to read more.

The configuration menu also comes with keyboard shortcuts. Ctrl + F opens the search box, Ctrl + S saves and exits the config menu, Esc exits the config menu, and Ctrl + L, Alt + L, Ctrl + R, or Alt + R will change the the config group you are in without the need to click on a category button. You can also use the Tab key to cycle through elements and press the Spacebar key or Enter key to perform an action on the highlighted element.

The Presets button on the mod's settings homepage allows the user to define config presets similar to how resource packs are managed. This feature is still in development and not yet available to use.

This is a list of known issues and mods that collide with Nostalgic Tweaks:

  • When the old water lighting is enabled, some neighboring blocks appear brighter than the neighboring water block due to incorrect calculations in skylight.
  • If you are experiencing issues with chunks not updating light changes (usually caused by mod conflicts), then disable the old light rendering tweak.
  • Optifine does prevent a few tweaks from working properly. Tweaks that are impacted by Optifine are tagged in the configuration menu. Version 2.0 now lets you run the game when Optifabric is installed; however, Optifine/Optifabric is not officially supported.

I will always do my best to ensure this compatibility section is updated when there are known conflicts.

If you do come across a compatibility issue, please let me know! It is best to report compatibility issues on our GitHub issue page for better tracking.

What resource pack is used in the demo video and screenshots?

It is the Golden Days resource pack by PoeticRainbow. There is also a button in the mod's settings homepage that links the resource pack as well.

If your mod pack is distributed on CurseForge or Modrinth, then yes!

Is this mod server safe?

As of version 1.0 (and 2.0), yes.

Will there be any backport to version 1.x.x?

Not for Nostalgic Tweaks. Use my previous mod OSECA, for versions 1.12, 1.16, and 1.17.

I ran into an issue running this mod.

Please submit an issue at our Github or Discord.
