A Reasonable Dosage of New Blocks for Exteriors and Interiors

Try the soilstone and its variants or bundled cobblestone, and finally build with "varnished stone" in Beta survival mode for once. Mix ink and bonemeal with varnished stone to make checkered floors.

Secret Desert Worlds

For a truly harsh early-game challenge, try generating an all-desert world (trees are rare) with Hard Mattress Mode turned on. Currently packaged like a prototype. I haven't decided yet on how much of the way it functions should be treated as bugged.
