RetroTweaks
An all-in-one tweaks, fixes and quality-of-life mod for Minecraft b1.7.3. Fifteen-odd classic beta mods merged into one jar with a single in-game config screen, where every feature is individually switchable and nothing is forced on you. Depends on nothing but the loader, and runs on both Babric and Ornithe.
- Already using UniTweaks? Keep it. Every feature the two share stands down on RetroTweaks' side, so they do not fight.
- For better auth and skin handling use RetroAuth. RetroTweaks' own session, skin and cape features switch off when it is installed.
- RetroDragon, RetroAPI and StationAPI are all optional and all detected. See Playing with other mods.
A full ranked breakdown of every option lives in FEATURES.md.
Features
One config screen for everything (Options -> RetroTweaks...)
Nested category pages, all in game. No JSON editing.
- A scrolling list, mouse wheel or scrollbar, on a black panel pinned to the left edge so the world (or the HUD you are positioning) stays visible beside it
- Checkboxes for on/off; a dropdown of every choice for multi-value options; a slider for numbers; a text box with a real caret for strings
- The hovered option's description sits in a fixed strip at the bottom of the panel
- Options another installed mod already handles are greyed out with the reason on its own line, rather than silently ignored
- Restart-required options are labelled
- Defaults restores the page you are on and every section inside it, after confirming - so from the top page it restores everything
- Settings stored in
config/retrotweaks.json
Server awareness
b1.7.3 has no way for a client and server to agree on rules, so RetroTweaks adds one over OSL.
- On a server running RetroTweaks, the server's world rules apply for the session
- On a vanilla server, or one that does not answer, world tweaks stand down automatically, so your client never predicts rules the server has never heard of
- Client-side options (HUD, mouse, video) are never overridden by a server
- Your config file on disk is never touched by what server you visited
Around 30 vanilla bugfixes
On by default. Turn one off only if you want the bug back.
Bit depth / AMD colour banding, Far Lands jitter, slime split, nightmare pathfinding, multiplayer entity jitter, boat dismount, sleeping camera rotation, wooden slab mining, liquid block drops (torches under water), bow held backwards, leggings while riding, ItemStack rendering under container text, caught-fish velocity, furnace eating your lava bucket, dropped item size, breaking animation on bottom faces, death screen formatting, death screen score, hotbar white flash on Fast graphics, grass block item texture, last durability point, fence lighting, torch bottom face, minecarts stopping on items, small slimes dropping slimeballs, stats checksum verification, and multiplayer mining delay (off by default, since some servers may read it as a hack).
Inventory and mouse tweaks
From InventoryTweaks, MouseTweaks and Glass Inventory Tweaks, merged into one set of switches.
- Crafting output shortcuts: ctrl-click, right-click and shift-click crafting
- Shift-click into armor slots and furnaces, double-click to collect a stack, number-key hotbar swap, drop key on the hovered item, ctrl+drop for the whole stack
- Shift-click slot priority (hotbar and armor first in chests and crafting tables)
- Click and drag: left-drag to split evenly, right-drag to place one per slot, live drag preview, shift-drag variants, drag to pick up
- Scroll wheel tweaks (singleplayer)
- Shift-click into dispensers (needs the server running RetroTweaks)
- Optionally use the 2x2 crafting grid as extra storage
Video settings past vanilla's limits
Real sliders for render distance, FOV (plus a zoom key), FPS limit (finer than vanilla's three steps, VSync included), GUI scale, brightness, fog density and cloud height, plus a clouds toggle. Optional vanilla far-fog values when render distance is raised.
Each of these appears on the Graphics tab and, where it replaces one, on the vanilla video screen too, always showing the same value. With RetroDragon installed you also get render scale, resample filter, RGSS and mipmaps rows.
Multiplayer server list, skins and capes
A real, persistent server list with names, edit and delete, and direct connect. Vanilla b1.7.3 has a single IP box with no memory of where you have been.
- Modern session authentication and player skin fetching, including 1.8+ outer layers
- Cape rendering, and an optional slim-skin shoulder raise
- Hide server IPs for screenshots and streaming
- Resource (sounds and music) downloading from a configurable mirror
- TCP no-delay for lower latency
(Server status pinging is not implemented.)
HUD editor and debug overlay
Drag-to-position editor for the hotbar, health, armor and oxygen bars and overlay messages. Simple mode moves the whole HUD as one block, advanced mode moves each piece independently.
Also: chat message fade time, hotbar item-name tooltips and their fade time, disable crosshair or vignette, Xbox-style X and Y button prompts, and the hotbar block rendering fix.
On the F3 screen: biome, day counter, hours played, light level at eye height, slime chunk, world seed, adjustable Y offset, hidden entity ID tags, the modern debug graph (pie chart plus frame graph), and coordinate hiding or scrambling for streaming.
Block placement, tools and behaviour
Fence placement, shape and connections, pumpkin placement, slab merging into double slabs, stair placement and drops, trapdoors without support, pressure plates on fences, sugar cane on sand, stackable chests, chests that open when blocked, bookshelves dropping 3 books, cobwebs collectable with shears and swords, placing blocks straight into tall grass, log rotation, player-placed leaves that do not decay, gluing trapdoors with a slimeball, colouring signs with dye, flint and steel fixes, and water source and lava cleanup fixes.
Plus tool effectivity tables covering which blocks axes, pickaxes and shovels are actually fast on: workbenches, ladders, signs, rails, furnaces, redstone ore, soul sand and around 30 more.
Gameplay and equipment
Shift placing (with a per-block blacklist), a dedicated "disable block interactions" keybind, right-click to equip armor, pick block from the whole inventory with fixes and behaviour modes, step assist, fence jumping, no food wastage, bed behaviour modes, and disabling the sleep ambush spawn.
Equipment (restart required): bows with 384 uses of durability, equalised base armor durability, and modern per-material armor defense points.
Recipes
- Modern: shapeless flint and steel, stew, minecarts and sticky pistons, wool redyeing, 6 slabs, 1-stone buttons, the modern fence recipe, snow layers, 3 ladders / doors / signs, the modern golden apple, and optional leather-bound books
- Tweaked: shapeless jack o' lantern, configurable stairs and trapdoors per craft
- Obtainable: craft things b1.7.3 gives you no way to get, including grass blocks, cobweb, fire, apples, dead bush, sponge, ice, double slabs and every ore (all off by default)
- Stack sizes (restart required): modern 64-stack doors, 16-stack signs
- More wooden items burn as furnace fuel, and tools repair in the crafting grid
Mobs, entities and world
Boat collision behaviour and boats dropping themselves, vehicle logout and login fixes so boats and carts no longer eat you on relog, the modern chicken hitbox, pig saddle drops, choosing what zombies drop instead of feathers and what pigmen drop on top of their porkchops, white-only sheep, ghast fireballs killing ghasts, farmland trampling rules (off entirely, barefoot only, or leather boots), and better burning, where flint and steel ignites mobs, burning skeletons shoot fire arrows, and fire spreads between entities with configurable chances.
World side: explosion block drop chance and per-source breaking toggles (creeper, ghast, TNT), defusing primed TNT with shears, fire spread rate and infinite spread, snowballs extinguishing fire, lightning and ghast fire toggles, fast leaf decay with min and max timing, apple drop chance, shears collecting tall grass, ferns and dead bushes, hiding or disabling grass and dead bush generation, Beta 1.8 leaf rendering, and sponges that soak up water again.
Scoring
Extended score tracking from WhatAreYouScoring: basic score for blocks placed and removed and mobs killed, a days-survived score with 100-day and 365-day bonuses, and the 404 Challenge scoring mode with a hard-mode multiplier and never-sleep / no-armor scoring.
Display modes for both the death screen and the in-game HUD, each fully customisable, plus a difficulty-based score multiplier on death. With RetroAPI installed, score also shows on its own achievement pages.
Old features, sounds and particles
Old features, all off by default: gaps in ladders, elevator boats, minecart boosters, hoeing grass for seeds, punching sheep for wool, punching TNT to ignite or defuse it, milking squids, pigs dropping brown mushrooms, and the pre-1.8 south-east corner rule for entering fluids.
Sounds, all off by default because b1.7.3 plays none of them: more sounds (tool breaking, shearing, eating and more), chest opening sounds, trapdoor glue and refusal sounds, the slab merge sound, and the explosion sound when nothing breaks.
Particles: turn off bubbles, smoke, large smoke, note, portal, explosion, flame, lava embers, footsteps, splash, redstone dust, snowballs, snow shovel, slime and hearts individually, or all of them at once.
Interface and system
A quit button on the title screen, a scrollable and wider controls menu, hiding the achievement toast, "Done" on the achievements screen returning to the menu, a front-view third person camera, and custom or hidden version text.
System: pause on lost focus, a configurable autosave interval, raw mouse input that bypasses OS acceleration, disabling LWJGL controller init, and a list of dimension ids the server will not load.
Keybinds
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
C |
Zoom |
Left Shift |
Disable block interactions (place against chests, doors and the like) |
Left Ctrl |
Toggle the debug profiler graph |
All rebindable in Controls, which RetroTweaks replaces with a scrolling list that names what each key does. Left-click a row to rebind, right-click to restore its default.
Installation using Prism Launcher
- Download an instance of Babric for Prism Launcher: https://github.com/Glass-Series/babric-prism-instance (or set up a b1.7.3 Ornithe instance instead: https://ornithemc.net/)
- Install Java 21 and set the instance to use it: https://adoptium.net/temurin/releases/
- Add this mod to the mod folder for the instance, picking the jar that matches your loader:
retrotweaks-<version>-babric.jarfor Babricretrotweaks-<version>.jarfor Ornithe
- (Optional) Add RetroAuth for better auth and skins
- (Optional) Add RetroDragon, StationAPI or RetroAPI. RetroTweaks detects all three and adapts
- Run and enjoy
No other mods are required. If you want the world tweaks to apply on a server you host, put the same jar on the server as well; client-only also works.
Playing with other mods
RetroTweaks checks what else is installed and gets out of the way.
| Mod | What happens |
|---|---|
| UniTweaks | Every shared feature stands down, so nothing is patched twice |
| RetroAuth | Session, skin and cape handling is left to it |
| RetroDragon | Frame pacing is its job; RetroTweaks adds render scale rows to the Graphics tab |
| RetroAPI | Used where it does a job better than a raw patch (extra achievements and items) |
| StationAPI | Modded fuels and smelting recipes are respected by the inventory shortcuts |
None are required. Options a detected mod covers are greyed out in the config screen with the reason shown, so nothing is quietly ignored.
FAQ
- Q. Why is Minecraft so small, with part of my screen white?
- A. You probably have screen scaling on, or a high DPI display. Options:
- Install RetroDragon, which is the cleanest fix
- Pass
-Dsun.java2d.uiScale=1.0as a Java argument in the instance settings - Change the DPI settings for Prism Launcher to system
- Or set your screen scaling back to 100%
- Separately, RetroTweaks' GUI Scale slider (Graphics -> Video Settings) reaches sizes vanilla's four fixed steps cannot, which helps once the window itself is correct
- A. You probably have screen scaling on, or a high DPI display. Options:
- Q. Can I use it on a server that does not have RetroTweaks?
- A. Yes. World-affecting tweaks turn themselves off for the session so your client never predicts rules the server does not share. Your HUD, mouse and video settings stay yours.
- Q. Does it change my world files?
- A. No. It is all behaviour and rendering, so saves stay ordinary b1.7.3 saves.
- Q. Do I have to use all of it?
- A. No. Every feature has its own switch, and that is the point of the mod.
- Q. Do I need UniTweaks, RetroAuth, StationAPI or any API?
- A. None of them. RetroTweaks hard-depends on the loader only. Each one is used if present.
