Silkworms
https://github.com/FluffyBacon678/Minecraft-Mod-SilkWorms
Silkworms is a gentle, vanilla-friendly lifecycle mod that adds tiny silkworms, hanging cocoons, and beautiful rideable silk moth companions to Minecraft.
Find silkworms in lush cave environments, raise them through their full life cycle, carry them in buckets, watch them form cocoons, and eventually tame the silk moths that hatch from them. The goal of the mod is to feel like something Mojang could have added: simple, cute, readable, and useful without overwhelming the game.
Features
Full lifecycle
Silkworms go through a complete natural life cycle:
Silkworm → Cocoon → Silk Moth
Silkworms start as small caterpillar-like mobs. They can slowly graze on vegetation or be hand-fed by the player. Once they have grown enough, they form a hanging cocoon. After time passes, the cocoon hatches into an adult silk moth.
The lifecycle is designed to feel natural and calm rather than aggressive or grindy.
Natural lush cave spawning
Silkworms can be found naturally in lush cave-style environments.
They prefer areas with:
- Moss
- Moss carpet
- Azalea
- Flowering azalea
- Cave vines
- Glow berries
- Spore blossoms
- Lush vegetation
They spawn in small groups and avoid spawning underwater, so they should feel like little cave and moss-dwelling creatures rather than random surface clutter.
Hanging cocoons
When a silkworm is ready to transform, it creates a cocoon that hangs beneath blocks such as leaves, ceilings, or suitable overhead surfaces.
Cocoons are a peaceful transition stage. They preserve the lifecycle feeling and eventually hatch into silk moths.
Silk moth companions
Adult silk moths are gentle flying mobs. They are designed to be cute, simple, and Minecraft-readable.
You can tame silk moths using cherry leaves. Once tamed, they become loyal companions and will follow you like other friendly Minecraft pets.
Tamed silk moths:
- Follow their owner
- Try to keep up better than an Allay
- Can catch up when the player flies quickly
- Do not die of old age
- Can assist in combat against hostile mobs
- Show a visible harness when tamed
Rideable moths
Tamed silk moths can be ridden.
Once tamed, the moth becomes large enough to carry the player, giving you a soft flying mount with a unique vanilla-style feel. The ride behavior is designed to be simple and readable rather than overcomplicated.
This is not meant to be a high-speed jet or a tech mount. It is a gentle flying companion.
Silkworm Bucket
Silkworms can be picked up in a bucket for transport.
A Silkworm Bucket can hold up to 5 silkworms, making it easier to move them between bases, farms, gardens, or lush cave areas.
Buckets remember stored silkworm data safely and are designed to behave cleanly during normal play.
Variants
Silkworms and cocoons have subtle natural variants.
The variants are intentionally gentle. They are not loud recolors or neon fantasy skins. The goal is small visual variety while keeping every stage clearly part of the same species.
Vanilla-friendly design
Silkworms is built around a vanilla-style design philosophy:
- Simple blocky models
- Readable textures
- Calm behavior
- No overpowered systems
- No complicated tech tree
- No huge custom UI
- No forced progression
- Works as a small living-world addition
The mod is meant to fit naturally into survival worlds, especially for players who enjoy pets, ambient mobs, farming, cozy bases, and lightweight exploration rewards.
Safe removal support
Silkworms adds real persistent content to your world, including entities, items, buckets, and saved mob data. Because of that, you should not remove the mod from an active world without cleanup.
The mod includes safe-removal commands to help you cleanly prepare a world before uninstalling.
Recommended removal process:
- Back up your world.
- Start the world/server with Silkworms still installed.
- Run the removal check command.
- Run the confirmed cleanup command.
- Save and stop the world/server.
- Remove the mod jar.
- Reopen the world.
During cleanup, tamed silk moths are converted into vanilla Allays so you still have a friendly vanilla mob where your moth used to be. They will not keep moth-specific behavior such as riding, harnesses, size, or combat logic, but they remain as safe vanilla replacements.
This makes the mod cleanup-friendly and honest about world safety.
Commands
The mod includes cleanup/safety commands such as:
/silkworms removal_check
/silkworms prepare_removal
/silkworms prepare_removal confirm
