π Introduction
This is a vanilla border survival map series built around vanilla survival gameplay. You start from a cramped patch of land, gathering resources with wit, defying day and night with courage, and pushing the world border outward through experience. Best suited to players who already know vanilla mechanics well.
π Before Play
- This series is not a conventional modpack. Its body consists of a dedicated world save and a core mod; the modpack itself bundles only auxiliary mods.
- Because the modpack update function of some Minecraft launchers overwrites a save's initial chunks, the dedicated world saves are not shipped inside the modpack. They are published in the Project Homepage's GitHub Repository. Be sure to download the dedicated world save and install it correctly by following the tutorial in the FAQ section, otherwise the game will not run properly.
- This series makes no departure from vanilla survival whatsoever. It was born because the very first player of the series happened to love the visual effect of the world border.
- Because of the border restriction β and because some biomes or structures hold exclusive resources β alternative ways of obtaining them have emerged. These traits are called Core Features, alongside additional Expansion Features.
- When you hit a wall, reading up on vanilla mechanics in the Minecraft wiki and consulting the Core Features and Expansion Features described below may well help.
- You are encouraged to play with whatever resource pack and shader pack you enjoy.
- Supported languages: Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Classical Chinese (recommended), English.
- If you switch language in-game, you must leave and re-enter the save before some of the text updates correctly.
- Note: This document was translated by AI. Please review it critically.
π Core Features
π About the World Border
The world border is a feature introduced in Minecraft 1.8 β a translucent, animated, diagonal wall of pale blue light.
The border has three states:
- Normal: coloured blue.
- Shrinking: coloured red.
- Expanding: coloured green.
Border properties:
- Players cannot cross the border, nor operate blocks outside it.
- Mobs do not spawn outside the border.
- Workstation blocks and certain redstone components outside the border fail to work.
- There is no air beyond the border; stray too far from it and you will take suffocation damage.
π₯¬ Border Energy
- Border Energy simply is the size of the world border.
- You can perform a Border Upgrade by spending experience levels, raising the border energy.
π Border Mode
- There are two modes, Locked and Day-Night, switchable at any time in-game.
The Day-Night mode is an Expansion Feature; see the Expansion Features section.
ποΈ Function Signs
The world provides sign monuments bearing three kinds of function sign.
- Border Upgrade: Spends experience levels to raise border energy.
- Switch Mode: Toggles between Day-Night and Locked mode; unusable while the Eternal Night is in effect.
- Summon Chaos Smith: Spawns a Chaos Smith at the player's current position β once per game day, and only one may exist in the world at a time.
Function signs have a hardness of -1 and a blast resistance of 3,600,000.
β If a function sign is destroyed, you can recover one with the following command and place it in Creative Mode:
/function border_survival:get_sign
𧱠Advancements

π Grindstone Enhancement (grind-enchantments mod)
- You can use a Grindstone to strip every enchantment off a piece of gear and onto a book, or to move the first enchantment of an enchanted book onto another book.
π Expansion Features
π Border Mode
- There are two modes, Locked and Day-Night, switchable at any time in-game.
π΅ Locked Mode
- The regular default mode.
π Day-Night Mode
- Daytime in Day-Night mode is no different from Locked mode.
- During the night of Day-Night mode, the mob cap rises to 140, the number of mobs per spawn cycle rises to 10, the chance of mobs wearing armor rises to 30%, and mobs spawn regardless of light level.
- During the night of Day-Night mode, if border energy is at least level 50, the area is doubled in size.
π Day-Night Mode - Eternal Night
- When night in Day-Night mode is about to give way to day, if border energy is at least level 100, the Eternal Night descends.
- Once it descends, Evernight Knights from another realm appear around the world spawn point.
- Under their influence, time is locked at the moment they arrive and the world plunges into an endless thunderstorm.
- Only by defeating every one of the descending Evernight Knights can their hold on the world be broken.
- After that, once you have lived through or slept past 0-4 nights of Day-Night mode, the Eternal Night descends once more.
In Peaceful mode the Eternal Night ends at once, and no further attempt is made to bring it about.
π§ Eternal Rainy Night / Eternal Snowy Night
- Once the Eternal Night has descended, the border may be stained by the Evernight Knights in any of six colours: Pale, Crimson, Dusk Orange, Radiant Gold, Deep Blue, Dark Purple.
- The deeper the stain, the more the world's climate falls out of order.
- While the border during the Eternal Night is Radiant Gold, Dusk Orange, or Deep Blue: every biome sees abnormal rainfall, warm or cold alike. The chance of mobs wearing armor rises to 40%/50%/60%.
- While the border during the Eternal Night is Dark Purple, Crimson, or Pale: every biome sees abnormal snowfall, cold or warm alike. The chance of mobs wearing armor rises to 70%/80%/90%.
- Once all the Evernight Knights are defeated the climate returns to normal, the border colour fades back, and that colour will foreshadow the next Eternal Night.
You can also read the coming Eternal Night off the moon phase shown in the Day-Night mode time bar.
π Evernight Knights
- The maximum health of an Evernight Knight rises along with border energy.
- With no player nearby, an Evernight Knight steadily heals.
- When an Evernight Knight takes damage, it disrupts the world and spawns further monsters.
- When a player defeats an Evernight Knight, it drops a random Dimensional Treasure Chest.
- Being World Bugs, all monsters seek to destroy it.
Evernight Knights appear only at the highest open-air spot within a random 16-block square centred on the world spawn point. In cave-type worlds the highest they can appear is Y96.
Evernight Knights are extremely dangerous; see to your defences and your healing before trying to duel one.
Evernight Knights never leave their current dimension and never ride vehicles.
π± Evernight Legions
- Every 3 Eternal Nights survived, the next Eternal Night brings an Undead Legion or a Calamity Legion.
- Every 8 Eternal Nights survived, the next Eternal Night brings an Evernight Legion.
π Eternal Heart
- When a player defeats a legion leader, it drops an Eternal Heart.
Right-click to use it and the Eternal Heart is destroyed; in the current or the next Eternal Night, the Evernight Knights will no longer act as one.
An Eternal Heart can be used in place of a Heart of the Sea.
πΉ Eternal Divine Weapons
- When a player defeats an Evernight Knight, it has a 1% chance to drop the weapon it holds.
- If the player holds a Looting weapon in the main hand, each level of Looting adds 8.5% to the plunder success rate.
Eternal Divine Weapons carry the Curse of Vanishing and cannot be destroyed by fire, lava, explosions, lightning, or cacti.
An Eternal Divine Weapon with no extra enchantment can Return to the Origin and become a Night Spirit Divine Weapon.
π Drops
- Mobs slain by Evernight Knights, Wardens, Elder Guardians, Guardians, and Iron Golems count as slain by a player.
π Sustainer
- The Sustainer descends at the world spawn point and keeps border energy stable.
- With no Sustainer near the spawn point, border energy drains continuously.
- Should the Sustainer stray too far from the spawn point, it will try to return.
- If the Sustainer dies, it descends again at the spawn point after a while.
- Being World Bugs, all monsters seek to destroy It.
When a Chaos Smith is near the Sustainer, the Sustainer heals nearby players.
The Sustainer is a baby cat and can be tamed and given gifts as normal.
The Sustainer never leaves its current dimension and never rides vehicles.
π Chaos Smith
- Has broken the laws of the world and shares a deep origin with the Evernight Knights; from Him you can trade for items that transcend common sense.
- Being World Bugs, all monsters seek to destroy Him.
The Chaos Smith is an Armorer Villager and breeds and restocks normally.
A Chaos Smith not standing in a loaded chunk does not count as existing.
π World Bugs
- A World Bug target draws the aggression of every monster within 384 blocks horizontally.
- A monster above such a target will pursue it at an infinite vertical distance.
- A monster below it will pursue it at a vertical distance of 16 blocks.
- Monsters other than Evernight Knights and Night Knights will not fight back while pursuing World Bug targets.
- If a player is in line of sight while a monster pursues a World Bug target, the monster turns on the player first.
Endermen will not switch to a player who has not looked at them.
Evokers pursue World Bug targets both 384 blocks horizontally and 384 blocks vertically.
A Drowned pursuing a World Bug target gains line-of-sight penetration once its Euclidean distance to the target is β€16 blocks.
A Creeper pursuing a World Bug target gains line-of-sight penetration once its Euclidean distance to the target is β€8 blocks and its vertical distance β€4 blocks; if its pathfinding is blocked at that moment, it ignites itself at once.
Creepers will not move away from World Bug targets of their own accord.
πͺ΅ Unbreakable Spirit Materials
- Immortal spirit materials forged by the Chaos Smith out of a Chaos Star fused from the energies of the three dimensions. They never wear out.
- Unbreakable Spirit Materials can be infused into a Border Upgrade function sign to raise border energy by a set number of levels.
β¨ Unbreakable Spirit Gear
- Gear forged by the Chaos Smith from Unbreakable Spirit Materials. It never wears out.
- Some Unbreakable Spirit Gear grants a special effect while held in the offhand:
- Chaos Star: Regeneration II
- Spirit Shears: Haste II
- Spirit Brush: Fire Resistance
- Spiritguard Shield: Absorption V
- Spirit Lure Rod: Speed II
- Warped Spirit Lure Rod: Speed II
- Blessing of the Sea: Conduit Power
- Vast Sea Spirit Trident: Dolphin's Grace
- Whirling Spirit Mace: Strength III
- Soaring Spirit Wings: Slow Falling
- Soaring Spirit Wingplate: Slow Falling
- Spirit Wolf Armor: Resistance II; when worn by a wolf it additionally grants Instant Health.
- Spirit Flint and Steel: the holder, Evernight Knights, the Chaos Smith, Illagers, Witches, Wandering Traders, and Trader Llamas all glow constantly.
π¦ ? ? ?
- A treasure chest forged by the Chaos Smith out of a Spirit Emerald. Once placed and opened, it gives:
- a high chance of a random Structure loot chest;
- a moderate chance of a random Village loot chest;
- a low chance of a random Treasure loot chest.
π Spirit Emerald
A Spirit Emerald can be used in place of an Emerald.
- Gathering Items:
- General Spirit Emerald: held in the offhand or set in any Item Frame, it draws the dropped items within a
33x33x33cube around it to its own position. - Container Spirit Emerald: if the Item Frame holding the Spirit Emerald is attached to a Chest, Barrel, or Shulker Box, it gathers only those item types already present in that container. Attached to an empty container, it gathers nothing.
- Where several General Spirit Emeralds surround a dropped item, the nearest one gathers it.
- Where several valid Container Spirit Emeralds surround a dropped item, the item splits into several item entities and is gathered by them in even shares.
- Where General Spirit Emeralds and Container Spirit Emeralds both surround a dropped item, it is first stacked and gathered by the nearest of the former, then split and gathered among the latter.
- General Spirit Emerald: held in the offhand or set in any Item Frame, it draws the dropped items within a
- Converting Materials: it can be turned by a Stonecutter into a set amount of basic building materials:

π Unique Features
βThe following are unique to the world in question and take effect only there.
πΈ Guardian - Cherry Blossom Mountain (Cherry Valley)
A Chaos Smith exists, and all monsters seek to destroy Him. When the Chaos Smith dies, border energy drains.(Superseded by the Sustainer)
π Eternal Night - Night Island Garden
- The world runs on night alone; there is no day.
- The Day-Night mode is locked and cannot be switched.
- Villager schedules are inverted, and neither villagers nor players may sleep before 23000 ticks.
A Sustainer exists, and all monsters seek to destroy It. When the Sustainer dies, border energy drains.(Now permanent)
π₯ Void Portal - Persisting Worlds
- Build a portal frame out of another dimension's theme blocks and light it with a fire source to travel to that dimension.
- Unlike a Nether portal, wherever a Void Portal stands, on transit it looks for the nearest portal within 256 blocks of the target dimension's world spawn point. Failing that, it generates a portal structure near that spawn point.
- Border energy is independent in each Persisting dimension, the Nether and the End excepted.
- Each Persisting dimension has a Sustainer of its own, the Nether and the End excepted.
- Evernight Knights descend only into the Overworld or a Persisting dimension whose border energy is at least level 100, excluding the Nether and the End.
- If several dimensions sit above level 100 at once, the Evernight Knights descend at random into one of those that has at least one player who is not spectating.
- If no dimension qualifies, they try the Overworld first; if the Overworld's border energy is then below level 100, they do not descend at all.
π§ Worlds
- You must use the dedicated world saves; a world you create yourself will not work.
- Worlds are ordered by type and combined difficulty, highest first. A higher star rating generally means a harder survival or a harder resource hunt.

π Save Upgrades
- Most worlds in this series are vanilla saves, and the modpack adds no mod that introduces new items or blocks.
- That means you can take an old save β say, Coastal Settlement from 1.21.10 β and upgrade it straight into the 26.2 modpack, so long as Minecraft itself has no trouble upgrading the save version.
- β Whatever happens, back up your save before upgrading, in case of accidents.
- β Void-type worlds have no terrain and will never run into chunk upgrade problems.
- β Worlds that are no longer maintained cannot be upgraded: Thundersea Navigation, Snowbound Ruins, Luxuriant Forest Isle, Thorn Manor Grotto.
π Save upgrade method: for 26.2 -> 26.3
Always back up your save before upgrading! In case of misoperation or accident!
- Persisting Worlds / Persisting Worlds Array Island:
- Download the overwrite-style world upgrade pack "World Upgrade-Persisting Worlds & Persisting Worlds Array Island-26.2->26.3".
- Select the two folders

datapacksdirectory except theinitfolder, leaving onlyinit. - Upgrade complete. You can now enter the game.
π Notes
Requirements
- β This series requires Java 25 or above to run.
- Most of the mods here are optimisation and auxiliary ones, and the base game is vanilla. If the vanilla survival of the matching version runs smoothly, so will this.
About mods
- β Mods tagged
[Core]must not be removed. - β If you add mods of your own, be aware this may cause compatibility trouble β broken features, crashes, corrupted saves β and we recommend prefixing mod filenames with something like
[θͺε ]to make them easy to replace when the modpack updates. - β We only recommend small mods that do not touch vanilla mechanics, do not generate terrain, do not upset the combat system or numeric balance, and are decorative, display, assistive or time-saving (for example: MusicNotification, voxy, advancement banners, projection, auto-fishing, FallingTree, vein mining).
- β If you add a mod containing new items, blocks or entities, then until that mod is updated to the new version your save's upgradability is affected.
βNever use entity-teleport mods to move this series' special NPC entities; doing so is known to corrupt part of their data.
(For example: in the "Persisting Worlds" world, if a Sustainer is moved (entity deleted and respawned), its data is corrupted such that it can pass through portals, causing that dimension's border energy to drain continuously)
(Also, if a Sustainer dies in a dimension that is not its own, its matched dimension will never spawn a new Sustainer)
βThis series makes no attempt to support mods that are not native to it. If an added mod causes some reaction, you become the author of the modpack you assembled and answer for it yourself.
βNote: under the Usage Agreement, a modified modpack is for your own use only; you may not redistribute this series' original files, modified or otherwise, in public.
π FAQ
Q: How do I install this series?

A: Update the mods only (this method applies only while the Minecraft version has not been upgraded)
- Use the launcher's mod update function to update the
Border Survival Coremod to the latest version matching the current instance's Minecraft version. - Use the launcher's mod update function to update the mods explicitly listed as updated in the Changelog to the stated version. (From 26.3 onward, the changelog will state mod version changes explicitly)
B: Migrate your resources and reinstall the new version
- Download and install the new modpack with the launcher.
- Copy the following directories from the old instance into the new one:
resourcepacks(resource pack folder)saves(saves folder)screenshots(screenshots folder)shaderpacks(shader pack folder)
Q: How do I repair a damaged function sign?
A: Obtain one with the following command; it must be placed in Creative Mode to work.
/function border_survival:get_sign
Q: Right-clicking a function sign does nothing?
A: The mod is not loaded. Check that the modpack installed correctly and that the game version you launched is the one the modpack installed.
Q: Commands will not work?
A: The vast majority of commands require cheats. Get command permission as follows:
- Singleplayer: press
ESC-> click Options -> click World Options -> change Allow Commands: OFF to Allow Commands: ON -> click Apply Changes. - Server: use
/op <playername>from the server console to grant command permission to the named player.
Q: Why is border energy draining abnormally?
A: The chunk containing the Sustainer has to be loaded. Since Minecraft 1.21.9, the notion of a world-spawn chunk no longer exists.
B: Use Carpet mod to add a fake player in the Overworld and tp it somewhere safe, or build a chunk loader out of ender pearls and bubble columns, so the Sustainer's chunk stays loaded.
Q: Why do I die on entering the End?
A: Border energy is insufficient; the border has not expanded to the coordinates of the End obsidian platform, so the portal drops the player onto the main End island, far beyond the border, and they suffocate.
B: Raise the border to at least a 100-block radius before trying to enter the End again.
Q: Why are no mobs spawning?
A: Check whether the difficulty is Peaceful. If your world defaulted to Peaceful, please report the world name so it can be fixed.
B: Mobs do not spawn outside the border, and if the border is below level 10, spawning will be rather slow.
Q: I built a multi-dimension mob tower in "Persisting Worlds" using the Void Portal feature and now have severe tick lag?
A: Every extra dimension Minecraft loads doubles the tick delay; once mspt exceeds 50.0 ms/tick, tps drops and the server lags. This is normal.
B: Before doing anything like that, use fake players to load several dimensions at once, run the following command and hold TAB to watch tps/mspt, then scale the number of simultaneously loaded dimensions up or down according to your CPU performance (the mspt figure).
/log tps
Q: Lag when placing blocks? Stutter when loading chunks? Choppy piston animations?
A: This is probably caused by dynamic lights. Try turning dynamic lights off.
Q: How do I set up a server?
- Install the Fabric server for the matching Minecraft version yourself.
- Install the modpack, adding every file from the modpack's
modsandconfigdirectories into the server'smodsandconfigfolders. - Extract the world pack into the server's root directory, renaming the world save to
world, or to whateverlevel-nameis set to insideserver.properties. - Delete the
[Advanced Connection Settings] mcwifipnpmod - Copy
config/carpet/default_carpet.confinto the save directory (usuallyworld) and rename it tocarpet.conf, to enable the[Carpet] carpetmod family - Setup complete β start the server.
Q: The server I set up won't start properly after I overwrite the modpack mods?
A: The server needs the [Advanced Connection Settings] mcwifipnp mod deleted to run correctly.
Q: My server has no Carpet mod features enabled by default?
A: The server's Carpet mod needs configuring separately for each save:
- Copy
config/carpet/default_carpet.confinto the save directory (usuallyworld). - Rename the copied file to
carpet.conf. - Restart the server.
If you run into any other difficulty or trouble, or if the steps above did not resolve it, please ask on Issues.
