Was doing some post-update backend cleaning up and optimising and caught a number of small issues/model inconsistencies/etc. so here's a quick fix for everything I noticed.
-
Added Hay Rug
Realised Hay should probably have this to match the other Thatch blocks.
-
Reworked Pillar Slabs (Thatch and Grimstone Slabs)
They now behave essentially exactly the same as full pillar blocks, meaning they have a "Y-axis" version that can be used to extend columns in addition to the pre-existing variants. I also reworked Grimstone Tile slabs to make them consistent with this since their previous model kinda made no sense. The only real loss there is there might be very specific niche cases where they'll look slightly worse next to the stairs but otherwise it's a total gain for them as they'll be much more versatile now. The only other general effect of this change is that now these Slabs default to facing towards you when placed, instead of away, for consistency with their Block counterparts over Stairs, but that should be easy enough to get used to.
-
Added all BFB Saplings to the Wandering Trader
Probably should have caught this sooner. Not a huge deal but just added it for parity with Vanilla. And nice if anyone's running BFB in a superflat world?
-
Tweaked Bamboo Thatch textures
The twine holding them together now matches that of the Vanilla Bamboo Raft for consistency.
-
Tweaked Palm Raft textures
Tiny change to add dark spots to the rope where it crosses the lines between blanks, for consistency with the Vanilla raft design.
-
Pillar Slabs and Carpets now have the same orientation as Pillar Stairs in the inventory
-
Moved Hay Blocks' position in the Creative inventory
-
Fixed a handful of Slab blocks' names being "Slabs" as opposed to "Slab"
-
Added Palm Wood Type
The first of a number of woods added in this update, Palm trees generate naturally on beaches and are unique in that instead of saplings, they have Coconuts.
-
Added Coconuts
To reflect the incredible versatility of real-world coconuts, BFB's Coconuts can be used for a wide variety of purposes. They grow new Palm Trees when planted on Sand or Red Sand, but can also be milked, sheared (by a player or Dispenser) for Fibers which can be used for String, Brown Dye, Bundles, or new brown Coconut Thatch blocks, or crafted into Husks, which can be crafted into Bone Meal or cooked into Charcoal. And of course, you can eat them.
-
Added Maple Wood Type
Red Oak is no more; now there's a proper wood type associated with the tree! Maple Planks are a very pale pink-ish brown.
-
Added Beech Wood Type
This replaces Orange Oak and its Planks are pale orange.
-
Added Pine Wood Type
Found in the new Alpine Forest biome, Pine is a darker brown that's less saturated than the darker Vanilla offerings.
-
Added Cedar Wood Type
Also found in the Alpine Forest, Cedar Wood is yellow-y brown.
-
Added Hedges
This one has been on the planned features list forever; basically just Walls made out of leaves.
-
Added Antigorite
This pale green stone block acts like a fourth member of the Granite/Diorite/Andesite family, being found in blobs underground or crafted from Cobblestone and either Iron or Copper Ingots, and being able to be crafted into Stairs, Slabs, Walls, and Polished variants for each of those.
-
Added Polished Granite, Diorite, and Andesite walls
As I was making Polished Antigorite Walls I was surprised to realise the Polished Vanilla blocks lacked Walls specifically. So now they have them.
-
Added Sandstone and Red Sandstone Bricks
And the usual Cracked Bricks, Stairs, Slab, and Wall variants for each.
-
Added Cut Sandstone Stairs and Walls, and Smooth Sandstone Walls
Just more parity stuff, filling in gaps in Vanilla block families.
-
Added Cracked Grimstone Bricks and Tiles
Forgot these as part of the original Grimstone update, but now they're here!
-
Autumnal Forest now spawns Rusty Wolves
A more fitting camouflaged coat for the canines native to the biome.
-
Tweaked Scorchwood Tree generation
Nothing major, just some changes to make the small branches look a little more natural and less consistently spaced.
-
Tweaked Green Jungle Tree Generation
Can now spawn with Vines and Cocoa, and can grow a mega variant from a 2x2 Sapling formation, just like its regular Jungle counterpart.
-
Tweaked Cracked Red Nether Bricks texture
The cracks are now slightly less dark so they fit the texture better.
-
Tweaked Willow Leaves texture
Less huge gaps.
-
Tweaked Willow Door and Trapdoor textures
Shrank the gaps slightly and moved them together so the side of the door didn't look strange while opened.
-
Changed sounds for Bamboo Thatch blocks
They now share sounds with Hay blocks to better fit the idea that they're woven fibers rather than rigid wooden blocks.
-
Berry Bushes in Autumnal Forest now generate fully grown
-
Fixed Great Library advancement not working; Great Library now requires placing Palm, Maple, Beech, Pine, and Cedar Bookshelves
-
Fixed Grimstone Tile Slabs having no textures when doubled
-
Fixed Grimstone having the wrong map colour
-
Added several new advancements for the new content
Since it had taken longer than I'd have liked to get around to a new BFB update (combination of real life and modding time being spent on other projects - keep an eye on my profile for those!), I figured I'd make up for the delay by throwing in my entire planned features list plus the kitchen sink.
The woods added by BFB so far are great, but tended towards the more colourful end of the spectrum, so I took the opportunity to add several new shades of brown, which are always appreciated when building. Coconuts are super versatile; they'll be godsends in early game survival but their Fibers also made for a natural way to introduce brown variants to the growing Thatch family. Throw in finally adding Hedges, a new stone variant and the usual small Vanilla variant and parity additions and BFB now has over 300 blocks and items!
I still have a few ideas for future updates (definitely not done messing with the stone variants, and there's one big update I have in mind, though that might still be a ways off), but hopefully a content dump of this size should make up for how long 5.4.0 took and keep you busy for a while to come.
- Updated to Minecraft 1.21.4
I was hoping to have some content for BFB ready for Christmas but with the way Vanilla updates played out, that doesn't really look likely at this point. 1.21.2/4 hitting back to back and were relatively time consuming to handle. Stand by for a content update soon^TM (possibly before Christmas but more likely in the new year).
-
Added Scorchwood Wood Type
Black wood! This is very much intended as a counterpart to Pale Oak (to the point that the Door and Trapdoor share its design), opening up new options for cool monochrome builds.
The trees are unique in that they don't have leaves. You can obtain their saplings by baking any other kind of sapling in a Furnace.
-
Added the Scorched Forest
This forest used to be thick and lush, but a ravaging inferno has long since left it scarred and barren. There's nothing exclusive to this biome, but given the weirdness of obtaining Scorchwood Saplings, it serves as an easy way to collect a lot of wood fast.
-
Added Scorched Grass
This makes up the ground in the Scorched Forest, so it can be obtained en masse there. It's also renewable, as the growth of a Scorchwood Sapling will transform whatever block it's on into Scorched Grass.
-
Added Ashen Carpet
Again, this can be quickly gathered in high quantities by visiting the Scorched Forest, or obtained renewably by baking Moss or Pale Moss Carpet in a Furnace.
-
Added Pale Oak Bookshelf
-
Added Fallen Pale Oak Leaves
-
Added Advancements for entering the Scorched Forest and obtaining a Scorchwood Sapling
-
The Great Library Advancement now requires placing Scorchwood and Pale Oak Bookshelves
-
Added Pumpkin Pie to the Blocks for Builders tab in the Creative Menu
-
Updated Nether Brick textures to match the changes to Vanilla brick blocks
-
Fixed crafting recipes for Vanilla Lectern, Bookshelf, and Nether Brick Blocks accidentally being disabled
-
Made Grimstone Tiles placement more intuitive
The pattern will now always come towards you when placed facing any direction, as opposed to towards you when placed vertically and away from you when placed horizontally.
-
Changed Ghostwood Planks textures to light grey
With Mojang adding Pale Oak, having two white wood sets seemed redundant. It's only the planks that have changed though - Ghostwood Stripped Logs were basically grey to begin with, and I kept the doors and trapdoors as they were since they're nice designs and definitely distinct from their Pale Oak counterparts.
-
Added Grimstone
Crafted with Cobbled Deepslate and Gunpowder (as a reference to their original names), this is a sort of pale red/purple blockset that has all the same variants as deepslate. Good for seasonal spooky builds!
-
Added Bamboo Thatch and Bamboo Mosaic Rugs
People do this in real life, so now you can do it in Minecraft! Thatch comes in block, stair, slab and rug variants, and I gave a rug variant to the Mosaic as well.
-
Pumpkin Pies are now placeable
One last fun bit of autumn content; they work just like cakes!
-
Achievement changes
Added one for crafting Grimstone, fixed Fall Guy triggering without hitting the ground, and changed the Green Jungle Sapling-related achievements to be more centric to the actual item.
-
Fixed Chiseled Red Nether Bricks texture
The Magma Cube is properly centred now!
-
Fixed Willow, Green Jungle, and Green Bamboo Trapdoors not being orientable
-
Added the Willow wood type (trees found on rivers)
A full new wood type and associated tree; a pale/pastel-y teal that pairs well with Prismarine or white block palettes.
-
Added Green Bamboo wood type
Bamboo wood is great but the initial Block of Bamboo is a really nice texture too, so now it has all the wood blocks!
-
Added the Autumnal Forest biome
Red Oak and Gold Acacia were nice but I really wanted to round out the Autumn colours, and rather than continuing to spawn them rarely in random biomes it seemed fitting to give them their own biome. It also serves as a nice showcase of Fallen Leaves. The end result looks pretty striking and will hopefully be a fun destination to adventure to in search of the new trees.
-
Added Orange Oak and Yellow Birch trees, found in the Autumnal Forest
-
Moved Red Oak trees to the Autumnal Forest
-
Added Hay Stairs and Slabs
Nice for thatched roofs. Fun fact, not a single vanilla slab is directional, so these are unique in that way.
-
Added Quartz Wall, Smooth Quartz Wall, and Quartz Brick Wall, Stairs, and Slabs
More parity stuff in the vein of the Nether Bricks. The slabs use the directional model from Hay Slabs though, so you can finally make floors out of Quartz Bricks and have them actually face the way you want.
-
Added Advancements
These are in part just a nice addition to the mod but also serve as a soft guide/tutorial to remind you what's in the mod and where some key items can be found. They were ton of fun to come up with so I hope you enjoy!
-
Removed Paper Lanterns
This was a tough decision but ultimately the Paper Lanterns just didn't feel Vanilla enough to fit in with the rest of the mod, so I took them out and now they're their own mod which you can get here.
I did two major things behind the scenes for this update (and the update to 1.21). Firstly, I basically rewrote the whole mod from scratch so all the code is now way cleaner, more streamlined, and easier to work with, which should make adding new stuff much faster. Second, I really doubled down on Vanilla parity - things like crafting recipe groups, proper tagging, I've gone through it all with a fine-toothed comb to make sure the mod slots into Vanilla as seamlessly as possible. The goal is that if you're playing on Survival, it should be impossible to tell what's modded outside of the Advancements screen.
Also it looks like literally the day I'm uploading this, Mojang are going to drop white wood of their own (second time this has happened lol) so if/when they do, expect Ghostwood to change to grey instead (the doors will likely remain unchanged though, unless Mojang's equivalents are screen doors as well).
