An affogato, more traditionally known as "affogato al caffè", is an Italian coffee-based dessert. It usually takes the form of a scoop of plain milk-flavored or vanilla gelato or ice cream topped or "drowned" with a shot of hot espresso.
About the modpack
Affogato is a modpack that represents my ideal version of Minecraft. It's a culmination of all the thoughts and ideas I had for the game over the years put into one neat, meticulously handcrafted package. It consists of a selection of quality mods, which help me in achieving my vision for this modpack, and my own mod, Affogato Tweaks, which adds features and tweaks I could not find in other mods, provides custom mod configs and data, and fixes mod incompatibilities and bugs.
The main goals of the modpack are the following:
- Change game progression to be more difficult, but feel more rewarding at the same time.
- Rework or improve underutilized and/or underwhelming game mechanics and incorporate them into the game's progression.
- Add new, meaningful content to the game that fits vanilla both functionally and aesthetically without compromising core gameplay.
- Get rid of common exploits and dupes, and put a way stronger emphasis on exploration and other core game mechanics.
- Add convenience features and mechanics, where it makes sense to do so.
What to expect
- A drastic overhaul of vanilla smithing and enchanting systems, which puts a heavy emphasis on maintaining your tools and armor with the materials you find, while gradually upgrading them in a way that feels meaningful and rewarding
- A stat rebalance of tools and armor, with the purpose of giving more material types more relevance during the entire duration of the game
- A rebalance of XP sources, which focuses on making experience mostly non-renewable by making mining and exploration the primary sources of experience
- Changes to the vanilla lighting system, which make light sources other than torches more relevant and increase the difficulty of traversing caves, while giving you more options to deal with the dark
- Changes to food and hunger, which force players to engage with farming and food preparation more often and make decisions on what food to eat and when
- Radical reworks of the game's methods of transportation, which de-emphasize the Elytra as the go-to option for transportation, and significantly buff other transportation systems which were made obsolete by the Elytra
- Enhanced world generation across the board, using more conservative mods that don't add a lot of new blocks to the game and aim to make terrain more interesting to navigate, alongside a bunch of extra and improved structures, for every dimension
- A cherry-picked combination of audio and visual additions and improvements, which increase immersion and make the world feel more alive
- A suite of user interface and control mods, which make managing inventories way less annoying, give you important info on the fly, and let you customize the game controls in any way you like
- ... and way more! Read the in-game guide book for the most important changes and features!
Is this modpack for me?
Affogato is obviously not for everyone, as it makes radical changes to some vanilla systems, however, if any or all of the points below apply to you, you should be fine:
- You've read what the modpack does above, and you like what you see.
- You don't mind the increased difficulty and emphasis on exploration that the modpack brings to the table.
- You don't mind the removal of exploits and dupes which enable certain farms.
- You're simply just bored of vanilla, and looking for a fresh gameplay experience.
Playing the modpack
In most cases, playing Affogato is as simple as installing the modpack through the Modrinth app or your favorite launcher, starting the game and creating a world!
You can play with your friends by either using World Host (included in the modpack) or setting up a dedicated server with the installer.
The in-game guide book will cover the most important information for you as you play - you don't have to read the details on what the modpack changes outside of the game!
However, here are some things you can change in order to improve your experience:
-
It's recommended to set the game difficulty to Hard for the best experience.
-
It's recommended to change the maximum allocated memory to at least 4GB, but not more than 8GB.
-
If you have performance to spare (which you will often do because of the performance mods included in the modpack), it's highly recommended to increase the render distance from the default 12 for an improved gameplay experience.
-
You can toggle shaders by pressing the K key in-game. The shader pack that comes pre-packaged with the modpack is Complementary Shaders - Reimagined by EminGT. You can change the shader pack options, but DO NOT CHANGE the following options:
- Cave Lighting has to be set to Very Dark
- Dynamic Handheld Lighting has to be set to OFF
- It's recommended to keep Glowing Ores set to OFF
A shader pack config file has been included for Euphoria Patches, as it uses the same config as Complementary Shaders. This shader is NOT included in the modpack, you can download it separately. USING ANY OTHER SHADER PACK IS NOT ADVISED AND UNSUPPORTED.
-
Feel free to check out the key bindings and customize them as you wish - several mods which improve them are included for increased customization and accessibility.
OS-specific issues
Linux
- If the game is crashing on launch (related to OpenAL) then follow the instructions here under section 5.6 (Audio stutters on PipeWire).
- The mod Borderless Mining can cause issues with the game window. It's advised to disable the mod if you're having these issues.
