🌱 Garden Trails
Garden Trails is an exploration and crafting mod about plants. You travel the world to find wild plants, harvest them, and bring them home to build your own garden: flower pots, planters, pergolas, trees. Every plant lives next to the others and together they form a small ecosystem that you design.
Then you put that harvest to work. Dry it, ferment it, feed it to the creatures that live around you, and you get silk, tea, sake and even a bird companion that makes your garden grow faster.
No required dependency, and everything blends into vanilla.

Full-on compatibility
Garden Trails has special compatibilities with the mods of the Dawn of Time ecosystem:
| Mod | Compatibility | Items |
|---|---|---|
| Dawn of Time | Silk | Futons, tatami mats, chairs, flags and cushions |
| Armor of the Ages | Silk, red and green Quetzal feathers | Raijin, Pharaoh and Japanese Light armors, Quetzalcoatl armor |
These recipes are optional and can be toggled individually in the Garden Trails config. Wearing the Quetzalcoatl chestplate with a Quetzal on your shoulder gives Reunited Brothers: Quetzal Trust speed plus reduced damage.

Other compatibilities:
- ✔️ Critters and Companions : Silk recipes for Silk Lead and Grappling Hook.
- ✔️ Let's Do Vinery : Garden Trails grapes can be crafted into a red grape bag.
- ✔️ Farmer's Delight : rice can be crafted into a bag of rice, and works on its rich soil.
- ✔️ Farmer's Respite : tea leaves can be used in the kettle to brew dandelion tea (Forge only).
- ✔️ Upgrade Aquatic : the mulberry is added to the
forge:fruits/mulberrytag (Forge only). - ✔️ Farmland compatibility : Aether and Immersive Weathering: plants can grow on their farmland.
- ✔️ JEI : dedicated Drying and Fermenting recipe categories.
Biome mods
Wild plants, the Quetzal and the rotten tree also spawn in the biomes of these mods, so Garden Trails keeps working in modpacks that replace the vanilla biomes.
Everything is datadriven. The tags gardentrails:quetzal_boosted, gardentrails:tameable_birds and gardentrails:quetzal_bond_chest let modpack authors add their own plants, birds and chestplates. The gardentrails:fermenting and gardentrails:dryer recipe types can be used in datapacks.

Features
Plants
Wild plants spawn in the world, and you can harvest them and bring them home. The biome list of every plant is a datapack tag, and you can add biomes to it in the config.
| Plant | Where to find it | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Boxwood Bush | Forests | Hedges (short and tall) to shape your garden |
| Camellia | Jungles, savannas, taigas | Leaves that dry into tea |
| Commelina | Swamps, flower forests | A blue flower that dries into blue petals |
| Cypress | Savannas | A tall decorative tree-like plant |
| Geraniums | Flower forests, meadows, birch forests | Six colors, dye, planters |
| Ivy | Forests, dark forests | A climbing plant |
| Mulberry | Taigas | Mulberry leaves (silk) and mulberry juice (sake) |
| Rice | Swamps | Rice for cooking and sake |
| Wild Grape | Forests, dark forests | Grapes and grape seeds |
| Wild Maize | Savannas, plains | Maize |
| Maple trees | Birch forests, dark forests, Maple Woods (Biomes O' Plenty) | Red, orange and green autumn trees |

Flower pots and planters
- Flower pot: put a plant on an empty vanilla flower pot to get the potted version, and use an empty hand to take the plant back. This works with the plants of Garden Trails, vanilla and other mods. The tooltip of a plant tells you if it fits in a pot.
- Flower Planter: a wider flower pot made of bricks (6 bricks). Place it against a wall, on the lower or upper half of a block. It holds any plant a flower pot can hold. Put a geranium in it to get the planter with hanging leaves.

Pergola & Lattice
The pergola and the lattice block handles the climbing plant feature. It supports Grapes, Ivy and Vines, place the plant on the support and let it grow over time.

Silk
- Plant a mulberry. It attracts Silkmoths. Put a light nearby to keep them around, collect the leaves for later.
- Wait for the eggs. A Silkmoth drops about three silk worm eggs during its short life. Killing it gives a smaller chance of eggs.
- Craft a silk worm hatchery with the leaves..
- Dry the hatchery on a drying tray to get silk worms.
- Place the worms on a stick bundle and wait for them to grow, then harvest the cocoons.
- Craft 3 cocoons into silk.
Silk unlocks recipes in Garden Trails, Dawn of Time, Armor of the Ages and more. You can also craft silk worm eggs back from a cocoon, to start again.

Food & Effects
Every edible plant has a distinct identity with status effects on consumption :
| Plant | Effect |
|---|---|
| Grape | Speed |
| Maize | Strength |
| Mulberry | Regeneration |
| Rice | High food value |
Drying Tray & Transformation Chain
The Drying Tray is the core of the crafting progression. Available in nine wood types, it transforms raw items into refined ingredients. Place items on the tray, wait, and they turn into something new, up to 4 items at a time :
| Input | Output |
|---|---|
| Camellia leaves | Tea Leaves |
| Commelina | Blue Petals |
| Grapes | Dried Grapes |
| Maize | Dried Maize |
| Moldy Rice | Fermented Rice |
| Mulberry Juice | Fermented Mulberry Juice |
| Silk Worm Hatchery | Silk Worms |
Drying and fermenting your crops unlocks stronger, longer-lasting versions of these effects.
Sake System
Sake is brewed in the Sake Vat. Each batch needs three ingredients, poured one by one, then the vat closes and ferments. When it is ready, right click it with glass bottles to collect your sake.

Step 1, prepare the base: fermented rice
- Wash rice by right clicking a water cauldron with it. You get washed rice.
- Cook the washed rice in a furnace. You get cooked rice.
- Mix cooked rice with mold to get moldy rice.
- Dry moldy rice on a drying tray. You get fermented rice.
Where does mold come from: look for the rotten tree in swamps (vanilla and modded swamp biomes) and brush the rotten oak log with a vanilla brush. You can also grow your own source, see Rotten wood below.
Step 2, fill the vat
Every sake uses the same base: a bottle of water + fermented rice + one flavor.
| Flavor | Result | Boost | Price to pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cooked rice | Sake | Saturation | Slowness |
| Mulberry juice (fermented) | Mulberry Sake | Regeneration | Mining fatigue |
| Crushed grape | Grape Sake | Speed | Hunger |
| Crushed maize | Maize Sake | Strength | Damage |
| Tea leaves | Tea Sake | Haste | Weakness |
Each sake gives a 1 minute boost followed by a short penalty. Drink several in a row and the effects stack. The rewards grow with each drink, and so do the consequences.
Rotten wood
Found in the rotten tree structure in swamps. Rotten oak logs can be crafted into a full set of decorative blocks (planks, stairs, slab, edge, plate, fence, fence gate, trapdoor).
Grow your own mold. Craft a Rotten Oak Sapling with an oak sapling and mold. It grows an oak shaped tree made of rotten oak logs, and you can brush those logs again and again to collect more mold.

Grapes
To harvest grapes, you have to place the fruit you can collect from wild grapes on the pergola. The fruit will grow until you can harvest it when it appears purple dots on the fruit texture, once they turn dark, you can collect the seed to plant it again.

Entities
Silkmoth
A small flying insect that spawns around mulberry plants. It lives about 20 minutes and drops silk worm eggs while it flies. It is the starting point of the silk chain.
Quetzal
A colorful bird that lives in jungles (and the jungle biomes of the supported biome mods).
| Action | Result |
|---|---|
| Wait and watch | It drops blue, green, red and regular feathers while flying |
| Craft a Quetzal Offering and give it to the bird | Tames it (1 chance in 3 per offering) |
| Right click your tamed Quetzal | Cycles between follow, sit and garden mode |
| Follow mode | It can land on your shoulder and gives you Quetzal Trust, a speed bonus |
| Garden mode | It stays where you left it and speeds up the growth of plants around it (crops, saplings, pergola plants, mulberry, camellia and more) |
Arrows
Five arrows, each craft gives 4 arrows.
- Red, Green, Blue Arrow: more damage than a regular arrow.
- Quetzal Arrow: far more damage than a regular arrow.
- Rotten Arrow: less damage than a regular arrow, inflicts Poison and Hunger for 5 seconds.

Chest generation
Garden Trails items can be found in the chests of vanilla structures. The chance is the probability that the chest gets the item. Each line can be turned off in the config, or all of them with generateChestLoot.
| Structure (chest) | Item | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Shipwreck (treasure) | Silk | 100% |
| Shipwreck (supply) | Grapes, maize, rice, mulberry | 20% each |
| Plains village house | Grapes | 50% |
| Savanna village house | Maize | 50% |
| Taiga village house | Rice, mulberry | 50% each |
| Simple dungeon | Mold | 5% |
| Stronghold (library, corridor, crossing) | Mold | 5% |
| Jungle temple | One colored arrow (red, green or blue) | 25% |
| Jungle temple | One colored feather (red, green or blue) | 50% |

Configuration
The config file is config/gardentrails-config.txt, generated on first launch. A restart is required after any change.
| Option | Effect |
|---|---|
generateChestLoot |
Adds Garden Trails items to vanilla chest loot |
generateSilk, generateGrapes, generateMaize, generateRice, generateMulberry |
Toggles the matching loot additions |
generateMold |
Mold in simple dungeon chests (5%) and stronghold chests (5%) |
generateArrows, generateFeathers |
Colored arrows (25%) and colored feathers (50%) in jungle temple chests |
dawnOfTimeUseSilk |
Enables the silk recipes for Dawn of Time |
armorOfTheAgesUseSilk |
Enables the silk recipes for Armor of the Ages |
armorOfTheAgesUseQuetzalFeathers |
Makes the Quetzalcoatl armor recipes use Garden Trails feathers |
<plant>_enabled |
false stops the plant from spawning (also works for quetzal) |
<plant>_extra_biomes |
Comma separated list of biome IDs added on top of the plant's default biomes |
Each plant has only these two keys, for example:
boxwood_bush_enabled=true
boxwood_bush_extra_biomes=byg:jacaranda_forest,mymod:my_biome
Biome IDs use the full form namespace:biome_name. IDs from mods that are not installed are ignored. The default biomes of each plant and of the quetzal are datapack tags (data/gardentrails/tags/worldgen/biome/has_<plant>.json): the config can only add biomes, so to remove some, override the tag with a datapack.
The layout of the config file changed. If you come from an older version, delete your old
gardentrails-config.txtto generate the new one.
